It’s now official.

Tesla Motors has charged up its 100th Supercharger station.

The tally, as it stands at this moment, is 86 Supercharger stations in the US and 14 Superchargers in Europe.

This 100th Supercharger is a milestone worthy of celebration, especially when one considers that Tesla Motors is the youngest US automaker.  Where’s Supercharger #100 located?  Here’s where:

No other automaker, aside from Nissan, has shown this level of commitment to expanding the charging infrastructure.

Like Nissan, Tesla puts real money behind it.

The Supercharger build out will continue over the next couple of years.  We’re relatively certain that at some point in the not-so-distant future we’ll be reporting on Tesla’s 1,000th Supercharger install.

More importantly for Tesla owners is that use of these range-extending Supercharge stations is free for life, so paying for “fuel” while on the road won’t be a concern for Tesla drivers.

*Note: Tesla will hold an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for Supercharger #100 on Thursday April 24.  However, Tesla says that the Supercharger in Hamilton, New Jersey is operational as of today.

Don’t they consider an area ‘covered’ if there is a supercharger within a radius of 750 miles?

Then #101 will probably be on the moon.


If you look at the map of superchargers then you will see what they are doing in and around California and around New York city.

It’s not all about “covering” the map for the sake of covering it.

Who cares about NJ? We have China to fill with a supercharging network now!

Yeah, who cares about the most densely populated state in the nation. Who cares about connecting the largest cities in the northeast such as DC, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Let’s only worry about helping another country – one which is about to surpass us in economic might (and arguably already has).

Well Tesla shouldn’t really want to install superchargers in dense areas .. . they want them BETWEEN dense areas. The people in the cities can charge on their own but when they drive between cities, they can charge up with a supercharger in rural areas.

By that logic, they should just stay out of the Northeast, then. The NE Megalopolis is one huge continuum of dense population, which totals 1.5x that of the population of California. That’s quite a large market to simple ignore…

Did you forget that Tesla is NOT allowed to sell its cars in NJ?

Tesla is going from strength to strength. The only downside is that these 100 fast chargers can only be used by Tesla vehicles, but if you are the one that is building the network, it isn’t like you should have to support your competitors.

Model S owners paid for it in advanced. Why should Tesla let anyone else use the customer paid infrastructure?

So find a way to charge the rest… it’s more about access to all possible sites than cost for me (within reason). If there were a fair subscription plan and an adapter, I’d be thrilled.

So if they allowed LEAFS’s (24KWh), Fit EV’s (20KWh) and Chevy Sparks (21KWh) to charge, will they be able to “Supercharge” at “Supercharge” KWh speeds (120KWh)?

That’s on average over 4C charge rate for those packs which is in the unhealthy range for cycle count/life. They would have to step down charge rate and take longer.

If *I* paid for the supercharger and other non supercharging EV’s were taking long to charge because they had to step down charge rate, I’d be PISSED!

Tesla may strike a deal with Daimler or Audi for their long range EVs, when they decide to make them, but not the masses.

Tesla is only a few years away from drastically increasing the number of cars on the road. They need supercharger capacity for that.

I would happily buy into the network, regardless of what car I drive. Despite what Elon said, supercharging is not “free for life”. It is not free at all – it costs $2000 to get in, but once you’re in, it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet.

The majority of the Supercharger sites are at least 150 miles apart. That is far beyond the theoretical range of most, if not all, other EVs. So it is fine that they only support other brands, and only the ones that need them most.

The “Electron Highway” is here. BEVs can now travel across the entire US, and up and down both coasts. The European and Asian expansion has just begun…

Nissan is also slowly emulating Teslas’s strategies to promote and advance EVs. Other automakers will eventually have to follow suit…

Where is the fabled “Hydrogen Highway” oil giants like Exxon, BP, Chevron and Shell have been telling us decades, was our transportation future?

Yep, that is why the near universal supply of readily available petrol showed that that it is clearly the way to power transport, and that it was a waste of time building electric infrastructure.

Great, now all we need is just around 150 of those in Europe and please please please connect Vienna/Bratislava with Italy with 1 or 2 superchargers (the map on Tesla website doesn’t show any plans for Superchargers in this area).

I’m not so sure about “not-so-distant”. Elon has said that the US could be covered almost 100% with 200 SC’s. I think it will be some time before they want/need to install 1000 (even world-wide).

I guess it comes down to what the “distant” future is, and how many other companies will join the high speed DC charging game.

Yep. The fact that they really don’t need very many of them is genius of it.

I think the density of Supercharger stations in the areas surrounding New York City are a clue. This first wave of construction, through the end of 2015, is for the specific purpose of allowing Tesla drivers to get just about anywhere for free. I suspect there will be another round of construction to follow, around the perimeter of major population centers, to allow convenient, fast, free travel through those towns as well. The final round will see large recharging centers in shopping centers and public areas within the cities for the sake of convenience for those who live in apartments, for instance, once the Model E arrives.

When counting dots on the US super charger there were a lot more than 200 and they were more spread out than they are building now.

I would say 1000 superchargers sometime in 2017. I would like to say in 2016 but that is a bit optimistic.

The Supercharger network is one of the most brilliant things that Tesla has done. It requires big batteries . . . but if you can afford a car with big batteries, the Supercharger network lets you drive all over the place.
