Gigafactory

Tesla Gigafactory complete render (note old production forecast)

Tesla Motors released its largest photo gallery of the Gigafactory so far, detailing all the recent progress that we have heard about recently in great detail.

The aerial shoot presents the four sections (A, B, C and D) currently under construction, as well as preparations that are underway for segment F and other future sections that ultimately blanket the area, making one huge building (internal walls between the sections will be removed later as needed).

The Tesla Gigafactory already produces battery packs today for the company’s energy storage business, and battery cell production itself is expected to begin in near future.

Planned pack production stands now at 150 GWh annually (previously pegged at 50 GWh).  Lithium-ion cell production itself is to be 105 GWh annually (up from 35 GWh).

I can’t figure out what the grid of squares are in these photos. Not on the building itself, but out next to it.

They look like footers (or pylons) to support the building.

Yes, footers that have just appeared within the last month.

This boondoggle was virtually idle for the last 9 months, from a construction viewpoint. There is a drone pic from June of last year floating around that looks virtually identical to the above photos, minus the footers.

All of a sudden, with the “Grand Opening” of the 14% that is completed and the accompanying cameras, AND the recently announced “modest capital raise”, they’re kicking up a hell of a dust storm!

Think they were focused on the inside of the first phase during that time. Now with that area ‘operational’, back to making it bigger

Idle for 9months?! Give me a hit of that man, that’s some powerful stuff!?

Boondoggle? A Boondoggle was the Iraq invasion of 2003 that is a Boondoggle.

You appear to be confused. The article in question is Tesla’s Gigafactory; you appear to be talking about some other construction project, one funded by taxpayer money… which the Gigafactory wasn’t.

Gigantic chess board. Jk, probably the footers for the foundation.

Are there still plans to carpet the roof with solar PV? From Solar City, I assume.

Yes, altho I think it’s questionable the solar panels will be manufactured by SolarCity. Their factory building project has been slowed or halted by a State investigation into the real estate project of which the SolarCity factory is the anchor. (Note I’m not suggesting any impropriety on the part of SolarCity.)

Not as long as they have the sweetheart, taxpayer-subsidised, discounted electricity deal from the State of Nevada.

Don’t expect to see any wind turbines either.

They will only ever exist in those artist’s renditions plastered all over the Internet, like lsot and found signs.

Well, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

There is certainly some reason to be skeptical, because Tesla announced grandiose plans to make the Supercharger network solar powered, but the relatively tiny solar canopies (compared to the football-sized solar farms which would be needed) at just a handful of locations, isn’t more than paying lip service to that.

But my understanding is that the contract Tesla has with the local electric utilities won’t supply anywhere near sufficient power for the Gigafactory when it’s running at full capacity, and that the planned solar panels and wind farms will be required to provide the factory with sufficient power.

Better to wait to see if deal is approved. Then simply manufacture your own panels as opposed to buying them from someone else.?

Elon just tweeted, “Should mention that Gigafactory will be fully powered by clean energy when complete & include battery recycling”

No! Tesla is looking to make the Gigafactory net zero with regard to its energy use. Also there’s nothing preventing them from using Solar City panels.

Hmmm, well right now what’s physically preventing them from using SolarCity panels is that SolarCity’s factory isn’t producing them yet.

“Impressive. Most impressive,” — Darth Vader, “The Empire Strikes Back”

For the first time, I can see why they decided to cut off the corners of the final building shape; or at least the reason for cutting off one or two of them.

Go Tesla!

Considering that the “Gigafactory” is only 14% complete, I’d say the “corners” are the least of Tesla’s worries.

good one! 🙂

Can’t help but notice another new username popping up here to spread anti-Tesla FUD.

So which shorter troll are you Stash?

Spiegel, Niedermeyer, Wahlman or some other lesser hater?

Why don’t you go crawl back under your rock since you will never make any positive change to the world.

It’s gonna be HUGE!

Yeah, just one of those foundation piling squares is as big as that pickup truck.?

BELIEVE ME LOL

When do the Aliens plan on giving us better power/battery technology?

I thought they already did it by giving us Musk…

How many square feet are already built?

According to another current InsideEVs article:

“As for completion, the Gigafactory size currently stands at 1.9 million square feet. Its completed size will be close to 10 million square feet.”

Heard the PUC ended solar in Nevada since late last year

Note that you can also see the gigafactory in google maps. Its along highway 80 east of Reno/Sparks.

No idea how old the imagery is.

Would have been cool if they did a time-lapse from start to finish. (or maybe they are)

The building doesn’t look that big on Google maps. They’re are other buildings near by and it’s just as big.

That’s because the current built footprint is only 14% complete.

Also the current build out you see has two stories which means the floor area you see is actually twice that size.

I’d be surprised if it was 2-storey. May have a mezzanine for offices and maybe some storage(?) but with fairly hefty automated machinery, overhead cranes (not forgetting lighting, heating and venting) I’d expect most of the manufacturing to be ground level for simple efficiency.

4 not 2

But how can you tell how big the building is on Google Maps, when they don’t provide a banana for comparison? 😀

Now, this is a proper comparison:

Tesla Gigafactory – Banana for scale

Of course, the problem here is that to be the size of a single pixel on this scale, the banana would need to be…

Oh my. Just think of all the “Banana in my pants” jokes that could be subtitled under that picture…..

*grin*

well done that man

That happens when someone used to play sim city as a child and ends up too rich.

Go Elon go!

‘Sim City World Domination’!?

It’s good to know that the new stock release funds gigafactory so nicelly..
