The Tesla Referral Program Applies To Model 3 Owners Too

JUL 30 2018 BY DOMENICK YONEY 13

Incentivize to sell!

The CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has famously said that the automaker spends zero dollars on advertising. While that might be technically true in the sense that you don’t see ads for the Model X or other products in print media, on websites, or interrupting your favorite sitcom on TV, there is still no small amount of promotion taking place.

Launching cars into space aside, the company is much more subtle about expanding its sales than traditional car manufacturing outfits, though. The referral program has probably been its the most productive sales tool aside from plain ol’ unincentivized word-of-mouth, but there has been some confusion about how it works for Model 3 owners.  Some of this might stem from the fact that you can’t use a referral code on Model 3 purchases. The situation was further complicated by the appearance of a “loot box” icon on some owner’s apps recently. But here’s the thing: the program has been open to them since the first deliveries. In fact, even solar customers get referral codes they can use.

Basically, it works like this. When you buy a Tesla product you get a referral code. If someone uses your unique referral code to buy a Tesla Model S, Model X or a solar setup, you get credited for it in the program. With enough referrals, you become eligible for prizes. Simple, right?

Ok, with that settled let’s have a quick reminder of the program’s present status. The last day of the current program is July 31st. If you’ve been having luck getting people to attach your referral code to their orders, then besides the usual baubles like fancy wheels or a Founders Series Powerwall 2, you may also be in line to race a Tesla Semi, which is, of course, the coolest possible prize.

Assuming it is renewed once again, the next set of prizes should be known in the next couple of days. We’ll be sure to keep you apprised.

*Note: None of the staff at InsideEVs that own a Tesla are allowed to offer a referral code on our site, as that would be highly unethical.

So Tesla is passing the advertising cost savings to customers, this is a very good model at least for electric vehicles.

Are these estimates realistic.

So I read article you linked and it makes no mention of the referral plan. What makes you think the TM3’s success is due to a referral plan? I think not. The referral plan is actually kind of dumb.

By the time somebody has gotten to the point that they have committed to the idea of buying a Tesla, whether or not they get a discount is irrelevant. They’re going to buy the car one way or the other. Tesla is giving out discounts when there is no reason to do so. Tesla could use the extra money right about now.

And for this you are my favorite EV site. No ‘Let us know in the comments’, no ‘Let me have your child, Elon!!’ – just pure, EV biased information. Thank you!

How about commentators?

I don’t see why not. You just don’t post it here. But if anyone says they want to buy one of those programs and don’t have a friend to offer a code, they should do it for you.
After all, people here are becoming some sort of friends also, right?

Great to know. I hadn’t actually thought about referrals after I get the car, since it isn’t for the 3 program.

Unfortunately I can’t get credit for all the referrals before I owned one.

BTW, Wall connector was installed this morning. Now impatiently waiting on the contract then shipment to TX. Tesla is official in “Delivery Hell” now.

Certainly better than Electrek staff for sure in that aspect.

None of our writing or editing staff own any Tesla stock or Tesla vehicles. I can almost say for certain that none own any automotive stock whatsoever (as it should be). However, there are some execs in Miami at Motorsport that have Teslas. We’re hoping to head down there and use the vehicles, the production staff/facilities, etc. for some exclusive content at some point.

Yes, as soon as I set up my Model 3 reservation account, I got a referral code (surprised that SCTY account didn’t, then again, it was before TSLA bailed out SCTY).

So, if anyone is interested, I can give you my referral code. =)

I already have 1 referral from my daughter’s in-laws
