Tesla Model S

Yesterday evening Tesla Motors sent out invitations for a press conference on Friday, July 17.

The press conference will include Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The conference will be held later today at 2 PM EST.

We’ll be bringing you coverage from the event as it occurs.

Speculation as to what the conference will focus on runs the gamut, from the reveal of the Model X, our first look at the Model 3, the introduction of autonomous drive for the Model S and so on.

To The Twitter!

To The Twitter!

Update:  Elon Musk has tweeted some info in advance of the conference

Basically, nobody knows what will be revealed, but we’ll all find out soon enough.

Usually there is a lot of buzz, hints on Twitter whenever something positive is about to happen. Friday afternoon press conferences are usally held to bury bad news over the weekend. This is odd timing.
Selling Telsa to google?

2PM EST is prior to market close so I don’t think this will be to bury bad news. My guess is autopiolot

Elon Takes the jobs of CEO of EXXON.

You know it’s going to happen.

Full autopilot enablement!

Elon announcing he is getting married and then divorced, again.

Hmm, GOOG is up $73 so far this morning. Up nearly $140 in the past week. 🙂

… which you think might imply… what WRT Tesla?

That Google is buying it? 😉

This announcement is a ‘phone-in’ type for reporters, so I really doubt it is a Model X reveal. Sorta want people in person to see that.

My guess is the autonomous driving software update that Elon previously said would be introduced in the summer. Don’t need flashy visuals for that type of announcement.

I guess news related to Gigafactory.

A UK gigafactory…

New CFO?

My thoughts, too. While not “material” per se, it is the appointment of an Officer of great import, and so really demands a formal announcement. Of course it could be anything, but something like a bond raise or similar truly material event would probably be scheduled after market close (like the 26 Feb 14 prospectus issue).

My second guess would be announcement of Model X pricing and the schedule of queue to configure and confirm. That’s very interesting for the Tesla aficions and critics alike, but it is not material.

(While we’re on the topic, I say $89.5k for the basic no-frills 85D version of the X. That would be just shy of $5k over the price of the 85D Model S, which would address additional costs from more aluminum, fancy doors and a very appealing center row seat.)

*Happy Dance*

Probably little tidbits in many areas as a number of people have intimated. One noteworthy point is that Mr. Musk has not spilled the beans on this one, as he is want to do.
They are going to start charging people who live within 20 miles of a supercharger for charging there, and no more real leather in Tesla’s.
(Both of which I hope don’t happen).

If you’ve noticed, he’s been more self-restrained since his rocket blew up.

Especially with all the ULA / Anti-Rocket Laser Speculation on the net. Either it wasn’t worth his time to stamp it out (i.e., correct people’s mis-thinking about the cause), or there actually IS something to what the conspiracy folks are saying. *shrugs*

Either way, fascinating to watch…

1. Autopilot software, second try since it was first announced October 9, 2014.

2. New CFO, perhaps.

3. Model X config: Too early. Closer to September 8, 9 or 10.

Anton: You really think MX config would be too soon? I they are shipping cars beginning late Q3, even for numbers fewer than 100 by 30 Sept., how could they wait ’til only a few weeks before?

That’s meant to be “If they are shipping” not “I”

Probably only 100 people will get the Model X in September. They can call them privately and ask them what color they want, a choice of four or five. All of those cars will be essentially fully loaded, so no choice or anything to configure there. There is no need to open up to the configurator until the launch event (Sept 8, 9 or 10).

That makes me think its Autopilot. Elon might also give us some other tidbits like buying more land in Nevada for the GF.

He also has a call Monday at noon (PT) for the SpaceX CRS-7 failure. Busy guy.

He is going announce the Christening of his new Volcano lair.

“One million dollars!!!”

Announcement: I am Iron Man.

More powerful batteries

Tesla has hired Gordon Ramsey and is spinning off a restaurant division, named Tesla Fork to further develop the super and destination charging 😉

If Tesla Opens a ‘Steak House’ and used the leather from their own cattle to offset the CO2 (green farming) for their cars– I think a lot of people would just give up and kill themselves. 🙁

Model S120D ???

That would be nice. But I still don’t expect any big pack sizes till X is released, or they have more battery production capacity to stuff those skateboards.

Elon probably wishes the GiFa was already cranking out batteries…

Nice name : GiFt 😉

I like what you did. 🙂

Follow the sequence… 70…90…?

The answer is not 120 😉

We will definitely see the 110 versions when the first section of the Gigafactory starts to produce batteries.
Maybe even earlier considering that the demand constraint seems to be a lot higher than some kind of battery/production constraint.

Yes, found that. So far the update is a “ludicrous” mode that allows the car to accelerate from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.

And a 90 kWh battery pack upgrade option for $3k. Not clear if that is an upgrade for the 70D?

Nope. You can already configure it on the tesla site.

Yeah, caught that. See my post below.

Ah, so its from 85 kWh to 90 kWh with a $3k increase in cost. Elon says that it will give the Model S “nearly 300 miles of range at 65.”

With the way I drive, I hope that means I could get over 200 miles of range. 🙂

90 kw pack

90D 2.8 sec 0 to 60 70 kWh rearwheel for 70k

This made me chuckle:

“What hopes does Musk have for additional sales with these tweaks?

‘I have no idea. We are just trying to make awesome cars.'”

Sounds like something Apple would say.

Does that mean the battery is 600$ per kWh?

Configurator updated:

2.8’s won’t be a patch. Only after the $3k battery upgrade, plus another $10k (for a fuse?)

Prediction: Tesla will lower their “ludicrous” upgrade price.

I’m guessing he’s bought the state of Nevada and will rename it Musktopia or Elonia.

The 70 RWD is now just a little more than what the original 60 RWD was.
