It turns out that the Tesla Powerbank (phone charger) is quite well-built.

Not long ago, we shared Tesla’s new Powerbank, as well as its Desktop Supercharger. Both are “available” on the automaker’s website for $45.00 each, although they were sold out at the time of this writing.

How can we be sure of what’s inside these little beauties? Can the battery be replaced?

Leave it to JerryRigEverything to post a video on YouTube that will answer our questions.

Yes, the Powerbank comes with a single 3350mAh 18650 lithium-ion cell, just like those found in many of Tesla’s vehicles. We can only assume that the Desktop Supercharger is the same.

As “Jerry” attempts to open the unit (which is something Tesla advises you not to do), he struggles to get inside. He has to break it to get access. Once Jerry is in, he shows the battery, its soldered connections, and a temperature sensor. He explains that if you know how to solder, you could fairly easily replace the battery (but you shouldn’t be opening the unit in the first place).

The Powerbank goes back together nicely. A little glue and it will be like new. Jerry hopes to get his hands on a Tesla vehicle to tear apart in the future.

Video Description via JerryRigEverything on YouTube:

The magical lithium power inside the electric Tesla cars is now jammed inside a much more portable Tesla PowerBank. Lets open this little piece of tech up, and review it from the inside. Does tesla use the same lithium 18650 battery cells inside their little Tesla Power bank? There is only one way to find out. Lets teardown the Tesla iPhone Charger.

Still “Out of Stock”.

The factory making the Tesla Powerbank phone chargers is currently in production hell. Once Tesla irons out a few production wrinkles caused 100% by its suppliers, the Powerbank production line will resemble an alien dreadnought, and the exit rate of Powerbanks will be faster than bullets from a machine gun.

One 18650 battery for $45? Where do I sign up? LOL

If they made a version with the 2170 cell (which costs <$3), they could probably sell tens of millions for $10 to retailers, or $15 direct.

Holy sh**, $45 for a power bank with a single 3,3 Ah cell. Even half that would be a really stiff price nowadays. A couple months ago I paid 22€ for a perfectly fine Anker 10 Ah power bank.

But it´s no Tesla Battery 😉
