It was more than a year ago when Tesla Motors first unveiled its Model S CHAdeMO adapter.  The price way back then was $1,000.  Status – coming soon.

While the status of coming soon remains, the price has been cut by more than half: $450

Following the recent price cut, Tesla quietly began accepting orders for the CHAdeMO adpater.

We can now confirm that Tesla is indeed shipping these adapters to buyers.

Every Model S owner who wishes to CHAdeMO charge now has access to this adapter at a price of only $450 (provided that Supercharging is already enabled on the Model S).

“Shipping” is questionable when an adaptor can not be added to shopping cart at shop.teslamotors.com

Would seem field testing is taking longer than expected as there have been random sitings of the adaptor over the last year.

The $450 price update was covered here, over a month ago.

As of, 19 Jan 2015,no, I repeat no CHAdeMO adapters have ever been shipped by Tesla or anyone else.

Guess the writer and this site are not worth reading for printing false, obviously made up news.

All one has to do is call the TESLA HQ in California to see the facts.

That is not happening with the site or writer, they must have been great at J school.. Never check your story for accuracy, is their mantra .

Good, because at the snail’s pace of ChaDeMo installations in the US the last thing we need is Model S’s hogging single chargers for an hour-plus each.

Last weekend in the Northwest there were queues of several Leafs at many QC spots up and down I-5, in freezing temperatures. Model S’s can already hopskip these highways stretches using Superchargers.

OTOH, maybe the lobby of Tesla owners will be more listened to by local governments, than the begging of lowly Leaf drivers.

So Model S owners who need to charge aren’t as entitled to use public DC QC stations? Sounds pretty petty to me.

No, what’s petty is the local governments, utilities, auto dealers, etc. who are sitting on their butts and not building more.

The cost of these is a literally a drop in the bucket, but no one wants to move first.

Washington/Oregon are lucky to have received a Federal Stimulus grant back in 2009/10 that built most of the interstate skeleton of ChaDeMos, which in WA is rather minimal. In all those places it’s just a single charger.

Since then – thousands of ChaDeMo using BEVs, mostly Leafs, on Northwest roads, but no new strategically-located chargers.

In California of course the situation is even worse. 100k EVs on the road, and still no public QC route connecting LA to SF and SF to Oregon border, not to mention going East.

I would guess that Model S owners will find it much easier to just roll ahead to their wide-open, free Superchargers rather than hang around waiting in a public spot.

One immediate use case is probably taking advantage of ChaDeMos in the cities, where there are almost no SCs and also better demand/supply ratio.

the reason Tesla are succeeding is that they are building a proper network of chargers that are designed to travelled between.
They are usually located in places that make sense and where food/drink/bathrooms are located.
No other manufacturer is taking responsibility for doing anything like this. Every other manufacturer is producing are car and not bothering with the charging infrastructure – they just don’t get it.

I’m confident that no Model S driver is going to be “hogging” a CHAdeMO when they could be getting over 2x the charge rate at a Supercharger. Model S drivers will be using these when there’s not other good choice, including overnight charging at the hotel.

When you’re enroute, the last thing you want to do is camp out at a charging station.

The Tesla supercharger network does NOT cover the entire USA. If you live in or travel thru an area that doesn’t have a supercharger then public DCFC is the only option.


At the rate of Supercharger roll-out vs CHAdeMO adapter progress, that may change 😉

In contrast to the OEM Tesla Supercharger network, which I think is very exciting, private third parties and Nissan, are indeed creating Chademo networks. Patience people! The gasoline system took years to develop.

Nissan is putting Chademo DCQC chargers at many dealerships, and nrg eVgo is building DCQC networks, placed at convenient retail locations and spread out enough to enable touring. In my area of Washington DC, they have the backbone of a nice network up and running. Maryland is also taking bids on putting in a DCQC statewide network, like the i-5 network in Washington and Oregon.

Steady, unrelenting progress is what’s called for. We’re far from finished.

Thus the glaring shortcoming of 70-85 mile BEVs becomes clear to those who justified the purchase thinking they could use the car on longer runs because of public charging.

Here in Washington State, even with stimulus money, the promised chargers which actually did get installed didn’t fulfill the needs in cities. So now, as mainly LEAF sales rise, the number of chargers do not. This is what happens when left-wingers expect government and taxation to solve everything in life.

Tesla building it’s own chargers looks to be the model for competitors moving forward. I anticipate a time in which others will have to partner with Tesla and possibly share format as well. This would mean either, A) more profits for Tesla, or B) a faster buildout of quick-charging infrastructure, meaning others may finance more locations. Or both.

The reason I am an independent and not far right nor left is that both sides have glaring flaws in their ideologies in so far as what makes a society a successful society.

I own a Leaf, quick-charge occasionally, and I definitely HOPE to see Teslas using the sames stations. And Soul EVs. And Outlander PHV and new i-MiEVs (come on already, Mitsubishi!). The more cars hog them the better.

This would be the best way to convince CarCharging, eVgo, and who knows, maybe even Chargepoint, that QC can be a business worth growing.

The image is a shipped product to an end user. A Tesla Model S owner. It is shipping. That’s a fact.

Are you sure that wasn’t one of the “loaners” shipped to a few Model S owners so they could attend a hearing in Nashville?


The picture in the article is a one of a shipped final product to an end customer. Months ago Tesla was accepting waitlist reservations. I am on that list. Apparently they closed the waitlist and are not taking new orders until they work through the existing waitlist. They did promise shipping by the end of the 2014. Looks like Tesla actually met a promised shipping date to the early customers on the waitlist. Availability should improve in coming months. Good to know shipments started. I’ll expect mine soon. I pre-ordered when it was $1000 so $450 is a nice surprise.

Is there a reason it has to look like a gas pump handle and can’t be more like their other adapters?

You probably need a handle to firmly insert the CHAdeMO side, hence the large handle. Any likeness to a gas pump is probably incidental. 🙂

This adapter probably holds the record for being both the largest and clunkiest for Tesla vehicles.

I used to make fun of the US CCS, calling it “Frankenplug”, but no more…

At least it doesn’t look as crappy as it used to. When I first saw it in the earlier days, I wondered what it was. The color scheme was awful, and I’m not even sure it worked.

Well, Chademo gets the blame here . . . the Chademo connector is pretty darn big.

While most communications is digital CANBUS (same as used on-board vehicles), an additional 6 relay and analog pin outs are part of the connector.


A slimmed connector like the Tesla plug use 2-DC pins and 2-digital communication/connection verification pins to greatly reduce size and cost of the plug and outlet connectors.

In terms of handle on early versions (0.9) of CHAdeMO connector. It was squeeze the connector firmly into the plug. New designs (1.0) don’t have the handle and are much easier to insert into a plug.

While it is technically possible to design a DC quick charge connector using just two DC pins by using wireless communication; none of the standards committees has considered this type of EVSE connection design.

You can understand why it looks like it does when you see the picture of it plugged into a Model S. It’s actually very clever in that the heavy Chademo connector end rests on the ground.

If the adapter was like the Tesla J1772 adapter, just a dongle sticking out of the charge port, the Chademo cable, which on the Nissan chargers is about two inches in diameter and stiff would have a huge lever-arm which would overstress the charge port and probably break it. The way the adapter is designed, it takes all that stress off of the charge port.



Still pretty expensive but if you can afford a Model S, you can probably afford a $450 adapter that will be pretty useful.

At least it’s not half the price of SuperCharger access…

uh, it’s actually 450 plus the price of supercharger access since you must have that endabled in order to be able to use the adapter.

Yeah, I noticed that fine print. That kind of defeats the purpose for 60KWH Model S owners. The adapter would have provided them with an inexpensive DC-fast charge option that is cheaper than the $2K supercharger access. But this really costs $2.45K now to get supercharger and Chademo access. Might as well just upgrade to 85KWH.

So I guess 60KWH user cannot access superchargers on a per-usage basis?

I’m in that boat over here in the UK.

The nearest SC is 70+ miles away but there are plenty of CHAdeMO points along the main routes I use.

I’d love to use the SC on a PAYG basis, but default to CHAdeMO for the few times I go outside the range of my battery (<3 times a year, and then only by 100 miles or so)

1) I thought they didn’t make any 40KWH cars? I thought they shipped 60KWH cars to the people who ordered 40KWH models.

2) This may be the reason why they didn’t sell the 40KWH model . . . it couldn’t handle the supercharging.

They shipped 60kWh vehicles with 20 kWh *disabled* to fill 40 kWh orders.

Drivers with a 40kWh Model S can pay to have the additional capacity unlocked. So technically, someone with 40kWh could purchase the upgrade to 60kWh, then buy the Supercharger access, then buy the CHAdeMO adapter.

Aw . . . that was kinda petty of them. Put the batteries in there but don’t let you use them?

What’s the better alternative? Force the 40k reservation orders to pay more for a 60?
Or cancel their order?
Giving them a car that meets their needs while also allowing them to upgrade at their desire seems the opposite of petty.

They could have just given them a 60KWH Model S. It was a limited number of them.

The Volt does that, too – there is a good chunk of capacity you cannot use. Mercedes B Class, too, or did that $600 option go away and the full capacity is now standard?

How about “Every US and Japanese Tesla owners” since the adapter is of no use in Europe.

I have no problem with Tesla owners using CHAdeMO stations, so long as they give us an adapter to user Tesla chargers on a CHAdeMO plug.

Tesla owners paid $2k for the privilege of using the superchargers. On the other hand, CHAdeMO stations tend to be paid with public funding so should be open to all users (dealer chargers might be an exception).

That is incorrect. Only 60 kWh Tesla owners are paying about 2000 dollars for supercharger access. But for 85 kWh Tesla owners it is free forever.

Tesla is financing supercharger network from their general revenue stream. There are no revenues that are earmarked for Superchargers. Right now no one is knowing how much supercharging network actually will cost per car when markets stabilizes.


Given that S 85 is $10k more than S 60, it’s fair to say that the $2k for supercharging is built into that trim level price.

Then give non Tesla owners the option to buy into that “privilege”…….

Tesla is open to that and has indicated that they would love another company to license the right to use Tesla superchargers . . . but they are going to have to pay for the privilege. But right now, I doubt any other car on the market can handle supercharger charging speeds.

Official email received from Tesla today, Dec 3rd.:

We do have you on the list, so we will contact you as soon as we have an official announcement or once they are available for your position on the list. Again, we apologize that we cannot guarantee that we will have one available before your trip later this month.”

They’re only shipping to Japan. The picture you showed was one of the Chademo adapters loaned to owners in Tennessee so they could drive to a Motor Vehicle Commission meeting in Nashville to support Tesla’s application for a dealer license (which the auto dealer cartel was trying to block). After they got back home the adapters were shipped back to Tesla.

I worry that this adapter will mean the end of the ability to drive from Seattle to Leavenworth reasonably quickly.

Hopefully Tesla will drop a super charger there.

I got on the waiting list in October 2014. I’ve been emailing Tesla every 2 months since. Today I got this:

Thank you for contacting Tesla Motors. We have started to contact customers to purchase the CHAdeMO Adapter, however, we have not yet reached your position on the waitlist. You are approximately 625 on the waitlist and we have contacted approximately 400 customers thus far. We will contact you via email with a link to purchase the adapter as soon as one is available for you.

We apologize that we are still unable to provide you with any timing updates and we thank you for your patience.

I’ve been on the waiting list for about 2 months, received the invitation to pre-order about 2 weeks ago, placed the order 7 days ago, and received the adaptor yesterday. The quality is good and the adaptor fits well. Not sure where to store it, I guess I will have to keep the adaptor in the lower trunk compartment and in the box.

Service Centers still don’t know how to activate the fast charging. The unit charged for about 10 seconds then cut off indicating Supercharging Not Enabled. Tesla indicating this would be resolved over the air in 2-3 days..err…

Still think the software activation is high based on the fact there is no cost to Tesla vs. the same cost on the Leaf which includes the connector and the wiring harness. That said, it’s more convenient for me than SC and I’ll gladly pay the 5usd/use and as others have said help make 3rd party charging a viable business.
