Tesla Model S, Renault ZOE And VW Passat GTE Capture What Car? 2016 Car Of The Year Awards

What Car? published its annual car of the year results for 2016 earlier this year (really for 2015 cars), and we figured it was high-time to pass along the results.

In the electric car category, there are 3 front-runners. The Renault Zoe Dynamique Rav Rapid Charge, the Tesla Model S 70 D (now 75), and the Volkswagen Passat Estate GTE, were deemed winners in their respective categories. However, the overall champion was the VW.

What Car? posted the following general criteria for selection:

  • A car that can cover at least 20 miles on electric power alone
  • Hybrids should smoothly switch between electric power and the regular engine
  • The extra batteries in EVs mean you have to sacrifice some interior space, but everyday practicality shouldn’t be compromised
  • Handling that doesn’t betray the extra weight of the batteries

Renault Zoe – Category: Under £20,000 ($28,303)

Renault ZOE Dynamique Nav Rapid Charge

Renault ZOE Dynamique Nav Rapid Charge

What Car? says:

“Feels like a conventional, stylish, nippy small car that just happens to cost pennies to run; Renault even includes the installation of a home charger in the price.”

  • Quicker charging feature, taking it to an 80% charge in 30 minutes
  • The motor is peppy
  • It fits 4 adults reasonably and has ample space in the trunk
  • 90 mile range is more than enough for commuters
  • Standard features include reverse camera, infotainment system, and satellite navigation

VW Passat GTE – Category: £20,000-£40,000 ($28,303-$56,606)

What Car? says:

“It has space, a beautifully finished cabin, and succeeds in integrating its technology so well that you needn’t be aware that it’s even there.”

  • Flexibility due to gas and electric
  • Switching between the turbocharged gas engine and the electric motor is seamless
  • It fits 5 adults comfortably and has a large trunk
  • 500 mile range
  • 31 miles of electric only range
  • Six-speed automatic

Tesla Model S – Category: Over £40,000 ($56,606)

Recently introduced Tesla Model S 60 - refreshed look...less expensive MSRP

Recently introduced Tesla Model S 60 – featuring a refreshed look, and a less expensive MSRP – which make take away from any mid-grade model awards in the future

What Car? says:

“Still our favorite EV if money’s no object; a terrific all-rounder that’s now even better value than it was 12 months ago.”

  • Lots of power
  • Fast chargers
  • It fits 5 adults and an additional 2 children with the (optional) rear-facing jump seats
  • 275 mile range
  • Over-the-air software updates
  • Appealing interior and central display

Is it the Tesla Model S 70D or the 60?

Also, it’s only mid June. Kind of early to declare car of the year. Especially w/the Bolt EV on the way (unless this is Europe only).

I see their website says 70D, but you have a pic of the 60. I wonder if they had known the 60 was coming they would have chose that car?

Once all the 2016 models are announced it’s fair game to have a look at which one is best. It’s not “best selling car of the year”.

Bolt is a 2017.

Is it 2016 MY car of the year, or car of the year?
