And much like their original Model S sedan convertible, a Chinese investor is bankrolling these new offerings as well by purchasing the first 100 coupes and first 100 two door convertible NCE will build.

All told, NCE says it will build 600 Tesla Model S Coupe and 600 2 door convertibles, in 3 locations worldwide (Huntington Beach, California – Barcelona, Spain -Dubai, UAE).  And they aren’t wasting any time either as production starts this fall.

“Newport convertible Engineering has been working on these projects since last year. Based on a four door Tesla Model S, Front doors will be extended for more comfort and ease. Two door convertible driving will be the ultimate green vehicle of our time,” said the company in a statement.

Last month Newport said it was in discussions with Tesla Motors to source 5,000 Model S sedans for conversion, and now the company has updated those negotiations…which apparently didn’t go all that well.

“Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) was told that due to the present strain in production of Tesla Model S, Tesla Motors will not be able to provide 5000 units exclusively to NCE. NCE is encouraging its clients to order Tesla Model S directly from Tesla Motors as soon as possible and have their vehicles shipped to NCE’s headquarters in Huntington Beach, CA; or any of NCE’s branches in Barcelona, Spain and Dubai, UAE.”

I’d like them to keep the roll bar. And perhaps that would allow keeping all 4 doors.

Merlin Ward

You could have the Tesla model S in a two-door or convertible.

The negotiations did not go all that well? Go figure. They made like 6k cars and these guys want 5k of them? Oh to have been a fly on the wall at that meeting.

MDEV

The coupe Tesla will be a hit, how hard is to produce sedans and coups in the same line?

I hope they facelift the nose cone 😉

Merlin Ward

Tesla, makes the car. NCE who i work for does the Converting to convertible, or two-door, or both. The company has over 31 years of experience.

Ryan

Just wondering what insurance would be on the coupe/convertible also insurance companies will not cover it in North America equate its not recognized as a car NCE just converts them no?

ffbj

I meant to add 6k a quarter, which would be most of their production.

Anon

Went to their website… Didn’t see real photos if these conversions, only artist renderings. 🙁

Show me what the finished vehicle with the top up, looks like on video.

Merlin Ward

We are working on tesla model S. I’ll show you a picture ASAP.

The long sleek sloped perfectly curved roofline is what makes this car stand out, taking it away doesn’t look too good!

Merlin Ward

🙂 beautiful car

I’m sure Tesla would like to control/offer all derivatives in-house, but this shows how hard it is for a small company with limited resources to cover all the bases. Even Mazda has trouble covering all the bases.

Looks like Tesla determined the biggest derivative opportunity was an SUV (model X) rather than coupes or convertibles or ??… But leaving bases open creates opportunities for others to try and fill them, which results in loss of control over quality, and potentially the brand messaging.

Spec9

I don’t understand the coupe. Who would pay $35K to go from 4-doors to 2-doors? Does that make sense to anyone?

Anon

Thought the coupe option was $49k ?

Merlin Ward

NCE we guarantee our work on everything we touch, our work does not void your Manufactures warranty. Many different companies in the past of cut vehicles’ roofs and thought that makes it a convertible. That’s far from making a vehicle into a convertible. you have to restructure the whole vehicle. Our company has 31 years of experience in engineering, making cars into someone’s dream convertible. It’s really not that easy. There’s a lot of prep work before you even cut the roof off.

But can they make a Stretchla?

Spec9

That is officially the coolest camper EVER. Assuming he gets it fully working with Supercharger access, that will be the coolest camping vehicle. I’m sure Elon will allow him to buy into the supercharger system even if they rule the crashed Tesla as no longer eligible.

Otmar

Thanks Spec9, I sure hope you are right! 🙂

kdawg

Well the wrecked Tesla charged OK, so as long as all the ‘brains’ are transferred, it should work in the Stretchla.

Merlin Ward

Funny picture.

Merlin Ward

I work for Newport convertible engineering. I am the Global sales director. Does anyone have any questions?

kdawg

I would ask, do you have any helpful advice for Otmar on his Stretchla project? Or any parts he could buy (have)?
