Tesla Model 3 With Glass Roof Spotted On Public Road


We’ve seen the Model 3 with a glass roof, but now we get some images of a near-production ready version of the glassy 3 out in the wild.

Some six months ago, Tesla announced the introduction of an all-glass roof on the Model S. Priced at $1,500, it’s actually cheaper than the $2,000 sunroof.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter way back then to make sure the world knew the glass roof was “very hard to develop,” but that it made the “interior feel amazing.”

We’re assuming that’s the same goal on the Model 3 equipped with the all-glass roof seen above (scroll through all 4 images by clicking the next arrow.)

What you’ll notice from the images of the glass roof Model 3 is that the top is clearly tinted heavily. The sun appears to be directly overhead, yet very little light makes its way into the cabin. Surely there’s some substantial UV/ infrared protection up there too, as found on both the Model S and X.

Tesla says that the Model 3 will be fully revealed to the public in July as production gets underway.

Hopefully, the glass roof blocks most of the sun’s infrared radiation because that’s what heats the interior, not UV radiation which regular glass blocks quite well.

How many pieces make up the roof, two or three? Here in Colorado windscreen chips are a common occurrence, even with insurance paying for a new screen can be costly, a whole roof may be a little much.

Two. A windshield and a roof.

Are we expecting the all glass roof to be an option or standard? Maybe this has been discussed and I missed it.
This is one of the few options that I will have a hard stop with on any preconfigured cars when my number comes up if it is an option. More light/heat let into the cabin is a definite negative for me.

I live in Florida and have a Model S with a panoramic roof. It is not an issue with the tint/UV protection. More heat comes through the windshield than the roof. I actually tinted my front windshield to reduce heat, but did not add additional tint to the roof.

Dan I’m in central Florida and on the road a lot, outside temperatures reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit during summer, so you are saying that there’s no difference between metal roof and panoramic roof?

The Model S recently dropped the metal roof as an option, so all signs are pointing to the Model 3 having a full glass roof as standard. Having all glass should also give their manufacturing robots easier access to the interior up until the glass roof is added.

Also, if they made a metal roof option for the 3 it would look really odd unless they paint it black. The front and rear glass are just so large that it leaves minimal surface area for a metal roof. Just look at this mockup on Reddit and you’ll see what I mean.


I really don’t see what is different about this vehicle. Every prototype spotted so far looks like it has a glass roof.

I would so much like to see that in the future…

Too Expensive. Not enough benefit. Unless you plan to park your very Expensive vehicle out doors all the time to receive afew pennies of power every month.

The root is in three pieces, not two.
Windshield, center section, rear section.
All glass just means the center section isn’t metal.

How likely is it that the T3 base model doesn’t have this, as part of economizing to hit the $35k price point? I’d be fine with that, and I actually expect it. With the volumes they’re targeting, they’ll have enormous economies of scale even with two (or more…?) major versions of the car.

This morning a rock hit my windshield and left a large chip/crack. Its an annoyance with a windshield, but when its the entire top of the car I wonder how insurance will look at it and how easy it would be to replace.

My guess is that because the roof is horizontal and thus lateral to the direction of travel, stones, debris, etc. hit the roof with less impact than a windscreen. A crack in the roof will therefore be rare.

How does a test vehicle get a legit license plate?

It will say, “Manufacturer” under the numbers/letters
