New footage high above the Tesla Gigafactory in Reno, Nevada gives us a clear look at the new sections.

We recently reported about continued expansion at the Tesla Gigafactory, following the issue of permits adding up to a total of $28 million. The permits were pertaining to Section G that was to be added next to the main structure. In the recent flyby (shown below) you can see that much progress has been made since the last update.

Tesla has filed a whopping 194 permits to date, adding up to a value of some $1,112,535,506. The company is nowhere near the project’s final stages, however. Tesla has admitted that it will be adding to the site for years to come. The completed project will cost around $5 billion, and employ around 10,000 people. A Tesla spokesperson shared:

“Already, the current structure has a footprint of 1.9 million square feet, which houses 4.9 million square feet of operational space across several floors. We are still less than 30 percent done. Once complete, we expect the Gigafactory to be the biggest building in the world.” (via Teslarati)

The Gigafactory will produce battery modules, the electric motor, and other drivetrain components for the upcoming Tesla Model 3, along with shooting out battery cells like “bullets from a machine gun,” according to CEO Elon Musk. Once Model 3 production is well underway, Tesla is expected to announce further plans for subsequent Gigafactories, including locations outside of the United States.

Nice day to go fly a plane.

Finally seeing solar panels!

It’s probably just the black material that’s on the roof before it gets covered up by the final white roofing material. You can see it in various photos in a google image search for gigafactory.

And how many giga-factories does their competition have going…….0

Tesla is going to leave all others in the dust if they do not wake up soon and smell the coffee.

They might not be gigafactories, but there are more than a few battery production factories being built right now. A couple of which will be in production this year. We also know that VW has a gigafactory in the works, along with a couple more down the road.
Don’t worry, there will be plenty of competition in 2018 and beyond.

Competition in 2018? Not a chance! These things don’t just pop up overnight and the traditional manufacturers have a tendency of not jumping head first into a big project like this, lost of studying needs to be done. I hope they have some competition by 2020 for the sake of ev’s but til then i expect existing factories to supplie the demand…in the best way they can.

You are 100% correct. They don’t just pop up overnight. That is why there are factories already being built. A couple of which will be in production this year. I feel like I am repeating myself.

I guess what I am trying to convey is they can’t do anything without batteries. Hence the reason things are getting done.

I’m sure there are plenty of battery factories getting built all around the world currently but which are of significant scale that can make a dent in the world’s lithium cell production?

Yep, Germany is going big on battery factories too particularly Mercedes who is building huge facilities to manufacture powertrains, batteries and battery packs.

Volkswagen is behind Mercedes and are in the process of building a battery factory too.

LG is expanding in Michigan, take it one step at a time. Risking lots of capital in one huge installation was done in the past.
