Tesla Gets Approved For Business License In China

Soon after China hinted at removing joint-venture requirements for foreign automakers, Tesla is now preparing for local production of electric cars, spare parts and batteries.

Tesla Charge Port China Plugged In

The first formal step was registration on May 10 of a new subsidiary in Shanghai – Tesla (Shanghai) Co Ltd.

When China removes the requirement of having a 50% joint venture with a Chinese partner, Tesla will then be able to build a production facility (forModel 3 and Model Y) on its own.

This would be a major advancement for Tesla, as cars would become cheaper (25% import tax will disappear, while incentives for New Energy Vehicles will become available).

It’s not yet known whether the plant will be built in Shanghai, as previously expected.

“The new company, registered in south-east Shanghai within the city’s free-trade zone area lists Tesla China head Zhu Xiaotong as its legal representative, and Tesla Motors HK Limited as the sole shareholder in the firm.”

We’ll see if China is really going to wave that join venture requirement. Selling EVs in China should be very lucrative for Tesla since China’s ZEV credit equivalence -the NEV credits- can be traded as they can under the CARB system and Chinese carmakers will be needing loads of them very soon. Not sure about the penalties and therefore the trade value of these NEV credits though.

… and how will these electric cars be powered??

China is building coal fired plants like mad….who gets the “credit” for that?

“Overall, 1,600 coal plants are planned or under construction in 62 countries, said Urgewald, which uses data from the Global Coal Plant Tracker portal. The new plants would expand the world’s coal-fired power capacity by 43 per cent.”

That article is out of date. China has canceled much of their coal plant plans

They managed to CTDOCA.

The Chinese “cancelled plants” move looks like political greenwashing to me.

Plants are being built (as many as 1 per week in china), huge investments abroad, coal use is rising, coal price is rising.

” Coal: Global coal demand rose about 1% in 2017, reversing the declining trend seen over the last two years. This growth was mainly due to demand in Asia, almost entirely driven by an increase in coal- fired electricity generation.”

Switching from an ICE to a coal-powered EV is still a win. Maybe a somewhat pathetic win, but still a reduction in pollution and CO2. So, at worst the “how will these electric cars be powered” question is equivalent to “things will be way better, but they could be even more better!”.
