Tesla Expanding Highly Used Supercharger Sites

Tesla announced earlier this year a goal of doubling its Supercharging network before year’s end, as well as a quadrupling of the number of available Destination Chargers.

Tesla Model S/X deliveries are experiencing record highs over recent quarters, and we are just around the corner of Model 3 introduction; so the expansion is badly needed.

Model 3 owners will be required to pay to use Superchargers, thus mitigating some demand…but to an unknown degree, as Tesla has priced getting a boast from one of its stations very inexpensively.

Now we are receiving more and more word that the expansion of Tesla’s existing charging infrastructure is underway, as many popular locations are being upgraded from 12 to 18 stalls.

According to the supercharge.info, Tesla has around 858 Superchargers stations with some 5,500 stalls.

  • North America – 389
  • Europe – 299
  • Asia Pacific – 170

The largest stations are equipped with 20 stalls.

Teslarati recently reported several instances of Tesla Supercharging expansion in California (and some of other places):

  • The Culver City Supercharger which serves a critical hub in the greater Los Angeles is seeing its first expansion from 12 stalls to a reported  18 stalls. It’s a busy site frequented by ride sharing services and Model S and Model X drivers that are passing through Los Angeles’ infamous 405 freeway.
  • Another busy Supercharger location at Harris Ranch, California which services weary travelers between Los Angeles and San Francisco is also getting a much needed upgrade from Tesla. Jack Bowers tweeted a photo showing the arrival of a larger PG&E transformer at the site to support the expansion of the 13-stall Supercharger station to 18 charging stalls.
  • Another popular Southern California charging location, the Redondo Beach Supercharger, is also getting an expansion.

Barstow, Dublin, Rocklin, and Gilroy are also being upgraded in California.


On top of that, I just encountered a new supercharger station at the Shell/IHOP gas station off the Stockdale Highway exit on I5 Sunday night. Took me by surprise since the last time we past through in February, it wasn’t there.

I got back from a trip to Iceland and I can say one thing.

Tesla needs to build a supercharger network along the main roads in Iceland to fuel Tesla Demand.

Not to mention Iceland has eight dollar a gallon gas.

Iceland has a population of 300K people, over a third of which is in Reykjavík, and the rest spread very thinly. The primary road network is ~4K km.

Which doesn’t really justify significant SuperCharger investment, and will probably remain so for years to come.

How many Teslas do you expect to be sold in Iceland if there are no Tesla stores nor Superchargers?

It is a high income country with a high penetration of EVs.

One Tesla store and 4 supercharger stations should have things covered. Then Tesla could easily sell 2k cars per year in Iceland, which more than justifies the investment.

They are currently building general purpose chargers i a ring around the country, and there is an unofficial importer of Tesla. (who just got a BIG fine for speeding very unsafely)

Yes, it has a relatively high EV penetration rate, as my link shows. HOWEVER, the absolute numbers are tiny, and since the total population of the country is so small, the max potential is ditto small. Using the Norway numbers, Iceland would justify one fifth of a Tesla store… and given the long road distances and very dilute population outside Reykjavík, you’d need a lot more SCs/mile of road than other current markets — it doesn’t pay for Tesla to do this (and shipping something big and heavy like a car to Iceland isn’t that cheap either). That same amount of investment would pay off much more somewhere else. So, no, I don’t expect many Teslas to be sold in Iceland until EVs are a lot more common everywhere. Cheaper EVs are much more likely. The current situation, with an semi-official dealer, is probably the best that can be expected for a while. 2K Teslas/year is simply delusional… It was _7_ units in 2016. I saw a few in Reykjavik two years ago. I also did a 20 hour drive of the south coast, and didn’t see any EVs. I’m visiting Iceland again in July and see if it’s any different.

They announced doubling the rate quite a few months ago. The historical rate was 100 new sites per year in N.A.

As you can see from the graph, the pace this year has actually slowed down. I sure hope a burst of activity happens soon.

Milford, CT had 4 (2 north bound and 2 south bound on I-95) but recently added 14 in a nearby mall. This had been the only supercharger I’ve ever had to wait at in 4+ years of east coast driving north of the Carolinas.

Charging is the tail that wags the dog. Why can’t the rest of the world learn that from Tesla?

Here in Ontario the promised charger network is unfolding slowly and not too useful. As a commercial traveler I’m not going to clog up my schedule with L2 chargers that might not even be available when I get there. Groups of L3 chargers along main routes are the way to go.

My 30kwh Leaf is a great car but after a few years taking the depreciation through the business I will definitely look at M3s as a possible replacement just for the charging.

Tomorrow’s charging needs will be here before we know it. A NEMA 14-50 (or two) in every garage and every carport will help tremendously as well as a quadrupling of superchargers LOCATIONS. Yes! LOCATIONS! In densely populated areas each supercharging location will need between 20 and 30 supercharging pedestals. Airport garages will need to have 120v standard plugs in their long term parking for EV’s. All overnight business and work locations will need multiple destination chargers/120v plugs available. Ev’s on the road today are a drop in the ocean of what’s coming.

More super charging is needed on US HWY 27 in central Florida.
