$40,000 Used CPO Model S EVs Overwhelm Tesla’s Pre-Owned Site


With the launch of the $35,000 Model 3 right around the corner, Tesla has updated its certified pre-owned program to include a warranty for higher mileage Model S EVs and is now listing cheaper used electric cars on its site.

Outlined by Tesla last week, a new warranty is being offered on higher mileage Teslas through its CPO program. The warranty includes a full inspection, any remaining battery and drivetrain coverage and a two-year, 100,000-mile (odometer) limited warranty along with 24-hour roadside assistance.

With the warranty in place, Tesla just posted an overload of higher mileage Model S EVs to its CPO site. The vehicle have been selling very quickly for prices that in some cases have been below $40,000.

Sure, you end up with a higher-mileage used car, but in most instances you’ll still get a vehicle that’s capable of outrunning a Model 3 and outlasting it in regards to electric range.

It’s all part of Tesla’s anti-sell-the-Model-3 campaign that’s been pounded into our heads by the automaker and it CEO Elon Musk.

Yesterday from Tesla’s shareholder meeting CEO Elon Musk noted the new stance – in some colorful language:

“…I should mention we are going to really give more prominence to used Teslas on our website. But we are not going to call it pre-owned. That is like a bogus name, that’s really BS — it is used okay. Everyone knows that. Who are we fooling here?

So the used Tesla section of the website is going to get a lot more attention. Particularly if the car is 4 years old, it has got a lot of mileage, (then) you can buy a Model S for as much as a Model 3. It’s like, maybe somebody wants to buy a Model S for $35,000 or $40,000 and they can have that today.  Then when the Model 3 comes in, they can switch out to the Model 3 if they want.

Model S is still going to be the, because it’s more expensive car, bigger, there is more room for bells and whistles….it’s still going to be our premium car. So used Teslas are going to get a lot more attention on our website.”

As of press, Tesla’s website is still full of “BS”…but we will forgive them because its a lot cheaper to get into a Model S now!

Of note:  the website address and title still notes the terminology “Pre-Owned”…despite the “bogus BS” name, perhaps the IT department has yet to catch up to CEO Musk’s latest straight-shooting moment of truth.

Hit up this link to check out the used Tesla available on the automaker’s pre-owned site. You’ll be surprised by the fact that you’ll find a P85 for approximately $44,000. We were.

Yesterday in his adress to the shareholders, Elon said that the term “pre-owned” is B.S.

They are used Teslas. Period.

I love this guy!

Load the website with your highest mileage used cars, to be sold unseen, right as your service department is about to be hit with the Model 3 invasion. Sounds like a plan.

I don’t think that they will sell you a car that has not been checked thoroughly and will need a service right after you buy it.


Oh, if only these prices were available in the UK. I would jump on them in a heart beat.


$41k is less than £32K, they want more than that for the new VW e-golf and you could potentially never have to pay for fuel again or very little at least.

US prices don’t include sales retail tax (VAT) so expect UK prices to be 20% higher.

There is no VAT on 2nd hand vehicle sales in the UK.

Say what!?!?!? Heck that entire story yesterday about used EVs from a Euro point of view should have only been about this. Talk about a huge cost savings!

Tantalizingly close to what I can afford. Maybe we’ll see half-price Model 3s in a couple of years as the Model Y ramps up.

Then half price model Y as model Z and Z’ talks begin when Model Y falters.

For a hard reset, bang your head against the wall.

Even if they have’em for $10K, I wouldn’t get one. S is longer than my Astro minivan, and S can’t tow a trailer. PxxxD with Ludicrous might be fun as a rental, but it’s not practical.

SparkEV what do you mean the Model S can’t tow a trailer?

Physically, it has better specs for towing than lower end pickups. Even a base model has more torque and power and body rigidity than most cars that tow. Yes, I know Tesla pretends it can’t.

(Tesla possibly removed Towing as a feature to help justify buying a more pricey Model X. Doing this MIGHT void the warranty, but so far, Tesla has not taken revenge against KMan or anyone else for towing).

Even 1955 VW Beetle can tow. Point is that Tesla S is not rated to tow, which could cause headaches with warranty should something go wrong.

In the Netherlands, when the car isn’t rated to tow, the car isn’t allowed to tow. So only rating really matters here.

Ummm. Several S60 are the same price as S85 and P85. Why would anyone take 60 over 85?

Mileage I would imagine

Or spec ? As P85 has less mileage ?

Several S85 has same features (at least the two shown) and less miles than same price S60.

Tesla used deals of the week. Drive one today, until your Model 3 finally comes configured with all the extra bells and whistles you want some time later next year. Not a bad deal anyway you slice it!

On the Tesla Canada site, they are still showing CPOs starting at $69k for a 60kWh and $76k for a 85kWh.

Not exactly the deals that US is getting.

Plus, I can’t get the Ontario govt incentive on a used car.

I’ll wait for the M3.

What are folks paying, ballpark, to insure one of these beauties I wonder…

For fun, I just went out to USAA’s website and got a quote. Granted I have all kinds of discounts.
no accidents or tickets
low insurance state
6 vehicles (multi-car discount)

And it was $100 per month. That’s 50% more than my 2015 Ford Fusion Titanium. So reference that I suppose and factor it up. ‘50% more than a normal car’. Probably triple my amounts for other states and certainly other insurers. USAA Rocks.

I’m 68 with a good driving record. 1000$ deductible, my MS premium is 95$ per month

I have State Farm and my model s was about 18$ dollars more then my mini van .i have herd all the horror stories.but I do not have one plus I always heard State Farm was high.
I will say that I got rear ended recently and it has been hell getting the other person’s insurance company to pay

No official tow hitch for Model S and too big are still deal breakers for me here in Europe. I need a ZOE-like car from Tesla. I just saw many Model S and X on a local come-together of BEV drivers. It’s impressive, no question, but way too huge dimensions. I would need a complete new garage.

And for a $100.000 BEV with dozens of kWh battery capacity I expect a 230V/400V AC out socket for mobile use of electric devices, like chain saw, pole pruner, mobile saw mill etc. A BEV without an AC out socket is like a swiss army knife with nothing but a knife.

The Swiss have had an Army far longer than Tesla had a Model S, though!

You do realize that all those cars all had to be serviced anyways, whether the original owner continued to drive them, or if a new owner drove them?

Yesterday that had a whole bunch (maybe 50?) that were $33K to 40K. Those got sold real quick.

Good value for taxi companies and Uber drivers. 100000 mile warranty for 2 years with free super charging is good value.

As I suspected as the Model 3 gets closer to reality – particularly for pre-AP Ses, the price has to come down, one would think.

If your only goal is to “get a vehicle that’s capable of outrunning a Model 3 and outlasting it in regards to electric range.” then you may as well get a Bolt. Well at least until 2019 until most people are able to get a Model 3 😀

Canadians already can’t get a 2017 Bolt EV, and maybe not even a 2018 Bolt EV, either! Very small allotment! Might as well drop a $1000 on a Model 3 Reservation, even today!

You need to carry insurance anyway so what is the problem again?

Insurance fees ending up being absurd.

You don’t need to carry collision/comprehensive insurance, which would cover fender benders on your own car which aren’t directly another driver’s fault (and hence covered under their insurance).

Only if you pay in full for the vehicle. Loans and leases require full coverage insurance, which includes comprehensive/collision.

Absolutely, full coverage unless paid out in full and you decide you want to gamble and count on the other party to have proper insurance.

I got my CPO S60 almost 2 years ago for $44k. It’s been absolutely fantastic. Considering mileage adjustment (mine had 24k miles), the prices don’t appear to have been much affected at all by the advent of new features/tech in the latest offerings.

Yesterday I noticed a 90k mile S60 for $30,500 and within a couple minutes of sending to a link to a friend, it was sold..

Also saw a 93k mile P85 for $36,000.

It would have been tempting a year ago. I was looking for a $50k Model S then. Now its more like why not wait for my Model 3.

The other factor, not much mentioned here, is that hopefully M3 is a smaller and lighter car. I like that. I don’t need to seat 7 or carry furniture.

Some of the lower mileage P85 or other model are cheaper because they are older.

Some of those cars are 2012 models which is significant discount to those that are 2014 models.

So, for many car here, it is either buying a 2012 P85 with less than 40K miles or a 2014 S60 with less than 50K miles.

It looks like the depreciation is much quicker on model year than actual mileage.

So, will the battery degrade quicker as it ages even though it has less mileage?

2013 S60 72k miles at $38k
2013 S85 71k miles at $41.5k

The prices don’t seem to suggest anything, you are seeing things that are not there.
