Silver Tesla Model X Spotted With Skis Out Back

The Falcon doors on the Tesla Model X present some challenges when trying to transport long items like skis.

Tesla has various solutions, ranging from a hitch-mounted ski rack, to a special roof rack held in place by suction cups (mention before by Elon Musk, but not yet seen affixed to a Model X).

However, as you’ll see in this video, it’s possible (though we don’t advise it) to transport skis without any of the above items.

Video description:

End of the day leaving Heavenly…

This silver Model X was either leaving for the day or heading to the HPWC where it disappeared from view.

Given the trunk was up, I’d guess that when they arrived they couldn’t charge, but now at the end of the day they needed a quick top up to get to Folsom, so didn’t bother to sort out the car until they started charging.

    That’s awful..let’s raise money to buy them a ski rack..poor things…I pledge $1000…NOT

  2. Pete Repete says:

Pathetic! Normal doors please and a roof rack.. I love the car though, but would prefer a SP90D estate should that ever become available!

    1. tom911 says:

Agreed – and anyone who skis has boots and poles and potentially wet gear to stow after a day on the slopes. Not sure where you are supposed to store all that stuff in the X – Falcon doors are a huge fail for me.

    Smooth move X-lax.

I wouldn’t want it any other way. The falcon wings are still cool as anything. I don’t ski and have never mounted anything on the roof of any of my vehicles ever.

I ski, cycle, play hockey, golf and also carry a lot of tool for work and I never use a roof rack for transporting all those gears.
Roof rack are noisy, and all the gear get dirty.
A roof box might avoid that, thought.
But it does all fit in my Leaf so imagine it would be easier in the X, even the S.

Looks like it’s not just ski’s crammed in there.

Thought the 6 seat option let you easily slide longer items (like skis) between seats?

  6. Speculawyer says:

Jeez, dude. Get a trailer hitch rack already. I think you can afford one. Sheesh.

  7. sven says:

I didn’t think it was possible to make a $150,000 car look ghetto. I was wrong. At least the Model X owner won’t be inhaling tailpipe fumes while driving with the rear hatch open like that.

Wait until summertime, when this Model X owner wants to go kayaking and puts his kayaks into the back of his Model X. That would make for a good video. 😉

  8. sven says:

Props to the video poster for his excellent choice of music to accompany this video!

  9. OB1 says:

If the falcon doors where up it would have been awesome.

  10. OB1 says:

Just wondering is it possible to drive around town with the falcon doors up and would it be legal?

    1. Trollnonymous says:

I’ve been wondering the same thing…

    2. Philip says:

Probably about as legal (and as sensible) as driving any regular car around with its back doors fully opened. 🙂

  11. Rick says:

I can just imagine the look this guy got from his wife when they were loading the skis into his new $150K toy.

  12. Murrysville EV says:

Who drives around with both front-facing and rear-facing cameras in their car?

  13. yamalink says:

So you’re saying the mattress atop the Ferrari no longer holds the title…

  14. Dennis says:

Roof racks are terribly un-aerodynamic, even when they are not in use. And because they are a bit of a hassle to install, people tend to just leave them up all the time.

    1. sven says:

People are lazy. It takes a couple of minutes for one person to remove roof racks. A cargo box ,on the other hand, requires another person to help if you don’t have a ceiling hoist/lift.

  15. ffbj says:

I wonder if that was staged.

  16. ModernMarvelFan says:

That looks to be Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe.

Probably the guy is just lazy to move the car from one side of the parking lot to pick up family/friends from the other side…

But the ski/boards would have to be stowed inside right now…

It is okay if you dusk them off the snow and then put them in a bag. But it is still a hassle and takes up interior space if you have a full capacity.

  17. Andrew Mitchell says:

yep, it was Heavenly [I was the driver of the S taking this video].
They were probably parked for the day at the arial tram… and may have been headed for the HPWC for a charge (and hence didn’t bother packing the X properly until they had moved the car).

[for the music that was just the easiest thing to sub on youtube to deal with any music copyright claims from the music playing in the background… I tend to do that for my videos]

  18. Koenigsegg says:

I would never put anything on top of my car, no trailer hitch, nothing
