A couple of weeks ago, Rhode Island got its first Tesla Supercharger.

Located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, the Supercharger features 8 charging stalls.

According to Tesla’s forward-looking Supercharger map, this is the only Supercharger slated for Rhode Island through the end of 2015.

Is one Supercharger enough to support the Model S in the US’ smallest state?

  • Size: 37 miles by 48 miles
  • Population: ~1 million
  • Population density: 2nd highest in US

We doubt that one Supercharger will be enough, but what do you think?

I think the odder state is VA. If you discount District of Columbia, Glenn Alen might be their only charger for a long time. It has four interstates too I95, I77, I81, I64

Apparently it’s not for Tesla lovers.

Having just spent the Holidays a bit north of Harrisonburg, I’ll second your thought. VA is a big state, and fast. So it seems odd that they would just forget about the majority of the state. They seem to be making the mistake of thinking that no one wants to travel central VA/WV… While it might be true that the destinations are limited, in appeal and scope when dealing with the $100K car crowd, VA’s interstates connect places and so not supercharging them really limits ANY tesla from become the 1st car of choice.

Isn’t Virginia one of the handful of states whose politicians so very wisely, an in support of free enterprise and the public interest, declared war on Tesla?

I wondered that very thing Assaf though it did not seem to be the case in other states fighting the same battle.

Not so much just having a SC in VA but looking at the driving lengths along I64, I77, and I81 without one are pretty long all the way through 2015. As Brian says, 2015 is not the end of time, but as Eric started the conversation there sure looks to be a statement being made in VA.

I live in Arlington VA, this state is anti-technology, climate change deniers and anti-EV, sadly no to many places to go with my Tesla due a lack of SC in Virginia. The installation of a 220V in a condo is almost impossible, they ask for commercial specifications, pushing the price of installation to a $5000.

I think Tesla will add more superchargers as needed if they continue to grow. Hopefully they will all have solar canopies.

That map looks like there’s 0 to 2 for all of NH, which is also unfortunate.

I absolutely think it’s enough. Rhode Islanders will have access to several superchargers in the surrounding states. If the people never left the state, they would never need a supercharger in the first place. I do hope Tesla installs enough stalls though.

And just because the map only goes until 2015 doesn’t mean this will be Rhode Island’s “last” supercharger…

Isn’t the idea of SCs to facilitate trips beyond the range of the car? If so, it is not necessary to have a SC in areas where lots of Model S owners live. What is necessary is to have SCs within the range of the car along all major routes out of such areas. Take for example the two SCs in south Florida, Model S owners in Miami can travel to Orlando or Tampa by using the SCs located at the halfway points of their journey to top up their batteries. On a full charge they can then get to their destination city drive around for maybe 60 miles or so and still make it back to the SC to top up on their way back to Miami. Perfect!

I live right near that SC and it is perfectly placed for travelers off I 95—if you go twenty miles in any direction you leave RI. Living in RI for almost seventy years I know most people can’t afford a Tesla including me but if they did they can only be twenty miles from the SC and there are a lot of things right there to do as in restaurants, movies, shopping.

Incidentally, anybody else notice that the SC in Cheyenne, WY is now live? L A to Detroit via Superchargers is now easily possible. Now, where in the world is that white Model X that should have been at the Detroit Auto Show?

It seems new Tesla Supercharger locations open every few days. It is great that Tesla supports Model S owners.

But I am curious about the Roadster owners. Do they also have Roadster plugs at all these new locations?

They don’t have ANY roadster plugs anywhere, as a general rule. Usually only at Tesla Sales and/or Service centers. The plug is a “TSL-01”.

That FINAL map above is of course only good as long as no more model S’s and X’s are sold. If S’s and X’s sell like hotcakes, coceivably you’d need 100 docking spaces per ‘center’, not 4, 6, or 8. Assuming 80 kw per dock, thats 8 megawatts, or 9627 amps on a 480 volt service. Of course, most utilities’ policy is to *NOT* supply this much juice through low voltage. Tesla would have to take delivery at 23 KV and own the transformer themselves.

I’ll repeat the question: What is the maximum power model S owners have seen on their dashboard display when charging a dead 85 kwh model S?

Slightly over 120 kW, if I remember correctly.

Nice! Easy access off and back onto I-95.

And plenty of eats, and a movie theater, within easy walking distance.

It meets the requirement to support people travelling through RI…

There are far more glaring omissions, such as Dallas to Little Rock, AK, a heavily travelled route over I-30 without any planned Supercharers that makes it effectively off limits for Tesla owners.

That’s the curse of having undertaken the job that governments should be doing. It will never be enough.
Think about how foolish it is that each automaker has to provide its own network. And each one at the mercy of the greedy power companies because Steven Chu the putz was totally clueless.

I can’t blame the “greedy power companies” for shutting down the large coal plant near me. The CEO said, “We can pay the school taxes, or we can pay the Carbon Taxes, but we can’t pay both”. (!!!).

Yeah. Why continue to burn expensive and dirty coal, when natural gas is less expensive?
