While plugged-in Americans are getting ready for the Tesla Model 3 to arrive later this year, EV fans in the UK just learned that they’ll have to wait a bit longer to drive their lower-cost electric vehicle. Tesla CEO Elon Musk just Tweeted that, even thought the team is working as fast as they can, the right-hand-drive Model 3 will not be available until the summer of 2018.

The delayed release of past right-hand-drive Tesla vehicles, while understandable, was a point of frustration for Model S and Model X buyers (one forum poster snarkily said that “Elon will land on Mars before the RHD X arrives “). The wait for the Model 3, though, will be much shorter than the two years that buyers had to wait to get their first RHD Model S EVs in the UK. The Model S launched in the summer of 2012 in the US, but the first UK Model S EVs were not delivered until June of 2014. So, if nothing else, a delay of 7-9 months, depending on when the Model 3 is actually released in the US, shows how far Tesla has come with its production process in the last few years.

Musk also said on Twitter that early Model 3 builds – the ones made for the first 6-9 month – will only be rear-wheel-drive, similar to how Tesla made the first Model S EVs. After a half-year or three-quarters of a year, Musk said, Tesla will begin to offer up AWD or dual-motor versions. Just like with the RHD options, Musk said that the AWD Model 3 will arrive “as soon as we can make it.” Sounds like the workers will be busy in Fremont.

Really though RHD is a smaller market for Tesla than LHD so it’s completely understandable that it would come out later…

Wow, kind of a bad news day with Elon’s tweets today. No HUD on Model 3, Model Y still a few years away 🙁

Nobody at Tesla has said anything either way about an HUD.

Personally, I hope it will happen, altho so far as I know it’s nothing but hopeful Tesla fan speculation that it will.

Since the driver’s display is in the middle of the car, seems like it would be simpler to design the RH version. Basically move the steering wheel to the other side.

How about a steering wheel port on both sides, then you can have 1 design serve both markets 🙂

You DO realize there’s a lot more to RHD than just sticking the steering wheel on the other side of the car, right?

The pedals have to move too.

The steering switchgear is different (the stalks on the steering wheel have to be flipped, so LHD drivers can go around turns with the wipers going (4 WEEKS of that nonsense in Australia, I NEVER learned))

The seats are different and have to be redesigned so the controls are on the other side

The switchgear on the doors is different

The mirrors are all different

Even on cars with the instrument binnacle in the middle (Prius, for example) the binnacle ITSELF is different, although on a Tesla this is probably a software change)

The front suspension has to be changed to allow the steering gear to be relocated

The underhood components for the brakes and such have to be relocated, and hopefully the attachment points are already there on the other side of the car or you have to redesign THAT.

Sometimes moving that stuff around requires OTHER things to move around.

If it was as easy as shoving the steering wheel over to the other side of the car GM wouldn’t have completely conceded the RHD market on the Bolt.

It was a joke.

Though I still could see universal controls being designed.

That was easier, since throttles are already in the middle, with prop & mixture controls!

That would be cool, except for when the thing wears out and it kneecaps you. I speak from experience.

New Bonanzas/Barons have regular dual controls now, right?

Problem with the Tesla, that would put the yoke right in the middle of the touchscreen 🙁

This discounts drive by wire. I don’t think any one is doing steering by wire, but if they did, then RHD vs LHD just got a lot simpler.
Other items such as door controls, seats, etc are still relevant, but much easier than fundamental vehicle structure.
It would be interesting to see if steer by wire is allowed and how that would feel. I guess it must be allowed to some degree of autopilot wouldn’t work.

Interesting…..the dual motor ones tend to be the higher-priced high-performance versions and I would have expected those may be the first ones issued to extract the highest sales/car to get the cash flow rolling……very interesting.

This has been know to the case for quite a while. Rear wheel cars first. It’s about getting them out the door as many as you can as fast as you can. The dual motors adds complexity and time, so nothing new or exceptional, that they are producing them first.

This is, as with nearly all articles about the Model 3, counting chickens well before they’re hatched.

Altho I’m a Tesla fan, I don’t think we should ignore Tesla’s history of chronic delays. Let’s wait until the first RHD M3 is actually shipped before we start congratulating Tesla, hmmm?

At least, you should see the first RHD TM3 being delivered in UK before any RHD Ampera-E:( Lol

But after the updated BMW i3 and Leaf 2.0.
