After several years in stealth mode and then unveiling its Coupe in 2014, Renovo Motors eyes Formula E as a potential battery supplier.

In the first and second season, racers are equipped with Williams Advanced Engineering’s battery packs. Intention to become Formula E supplier was expressed by Rimac Automobili too.

Renovo Motors CEO Christopher Heiser said:

“We have been working on advanced vehicle technology regarding the electric powertrain for over five years now. Most of the time that was in stealth mode in order to create the platform. We launched the Renovo Coupe in 2014 and we have been testing it on the road and the track ever since to improve the performance and reliability.”

“The technology transfer between electric road and race cars is really good. Take the Formula E car of the inaugural season. It uses the same electric motor as we can find in the McLaren P1. This allows development and makes people exciting about it.”

“Our battery technology makes racing significantly better than the technology that is currently being raced with in the series. We know how to take this into motorsport context as the team has experience with top level championships like Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship.”

Renovo Motors hopes to team up with Mahindra, according to the article.

We are saddened that there is battle to become the sole supplier for season three and four, which means that all the teams will get the same battery pack, just like today. We rather hope that from season three every team will get a chance to use a different system, like with drivetrains in season two. Batteries are the most important part and it seems that development and direct competition between teams will not be allowed.

“One opportunity to get involved in Formula E is for Renovo Motors to become the sole battery supplier for season three and four. This is a possibility as they’ve entered the tender partnering Mahindra. “We have been talking to different companies. They [Mahindra] were one of the first manufacturers to sell electric vehicles to the public, I believe over fifteen years now”, Heiser indicated and emphasised that they are excited to possibly become part of an evolving championship as Formula E is today.”

    Say what? that’s the first time I’ve heard that they wont be allowing every team to develop their own batteries. Is this true?

      Yes, in order to be “cheap” all used the same cars in season one. Own developments are introduced step by step only. This was clear since Start of Formular e.

        I believe it was originally-
        season 1- all the same car
        season 2- motor and controller development
        season 3- battery development.

        I dont want to wait till 2020 to see open constructor battery development.

        maybe i’m to use to F1 and the WEC, its pretty much constant development every race.

      The rules are constantly in flux as things progress, but as it stands now batteries won’t be opened up for development until season five. Agag wants the series well and truly established before letting everyone compete with their wallets.

      That said, there are solid reasons to save battery development for last. Batteries being the biggest and heaviest components of the cars means they need to be mounted low and central in the chassis. Opening up battery development before chassis development forces teams to spend huge amounts of money developing batteries within a form factor that’ll become irrelevant the second chassis development gets the green light.

      Frankly, were it not for Williams building substandard packs with poor capacity and thermal management, the series wouldn’t be accepting supplier tenders at all.
