Renault Electric Vehicles Sales Slip By Over 40% In February

Renault was for a long time the leader in European EV market with share of over 50%, but in most of the recent sales reports, we see that the French automaker is going backward and is falling off fast.

One model – the Fluence Z.E. – was the victim of the Better Place collapse, but now three other models are falling in February.

Kangoo Z.E. sales fell by 40% year over year last month.

ZOE is struggling to stay green, but this month it will have to face off with 1,089 sales in March 2013 and the whole table will be flooded with red if Renault can’t put a stop to the downward sales trend.

This situation is mostly associated with lower sales in France and is not the news Renault wants the world to hear.

Time is ticking away and unofficially we heard that March will not be Renault’s month either. Maybe the upcoming launch in Norway will help ZOE regain some momentum.

That’s no wonder.
I have the impression that Renault are not really serious in wanting to sell a large quantity. There is absolutely no advertising. The huge advantage of the ZOE, the cameleon charging system and it’s ability to charge on all tree phases of a 400V/32A connection is never mentioned when car magazines compare e-cars.
I know 6 ZOE owners personally. Everybody loves the car and do not use ICE cars any more. They also drive it for longer distances, because it can be charged in less than an hour without a DC quickcharger. i3, Leaf, eUp, etc. can’t do that.
So I think, it is bad marketing.
And the ZOE is not available in Norway!!! Why????

it is not avalible in sweden ither, for the same reason they say.
they are modefying the battery pack to better handel cold wether. (or so they say)

Kalle, both Twizy and Kangoo ZE is available! And from may is also Zoe here. No release date for Fluence in Sweden yet.
And Renault do a lot advertising.
The main issue is to get the infrastructure for charging well planed and built.

Damn it, France . . . buy those nuclear powered cars! They’ll help clear up that Paris smog.

With the exception of Zoe, they are all very ugly and boring. Perhaps that is the reason they don’t sell well.

We live in the Netherlands, where the purchase of electric cars is subsidized by the government , electricity is cheap (we purchase 100 % green electricity from solar, wind , tides for € 0.18 / KWh ) and go as a second car Twizy . We are very pleased with the vehicle. What many deters the monthly battery rental, but forget the one when the battery is faulty when you get a new lease , otherwise one would have to buy it, and only the battery for the Twizy with 48V/6KWh/60A costs € 3500 ! However, there is also a very good charging stations network here . Which countries as safe can bear responsibility for the decline in sales with be imagined , especially the Federal Republic of Germany, where more fuel -eating monster cars instead promotes e- mobility. Well… The Netherlands is no good example because of the extreme use of fossil fuels. What is it, like 90% fossil fuels?

That’s even worse than Poland, UK and Germany.

Please help your countrymen realise this and start to change it.

They’ve started advertising Zoe in Germany recently. The copy has German actors in it, which probably means they are going country by country rather than world or at least Europe wide.

PS Twizy is not boring, it is cute and practical )

Battery leasing seems to be quite the success then.

Hm, everybody who buys Renault ZE is ok with it. Question is, how many more would buy if they where allowed to choose. I would.

I have bought my leaf this year with the new lease possibility. I was waiting for this option, I already had a twizy and it got sold without any issues last month. Buyers seems to feel more sure when they lease the battery instead of buying.

It looks like the new #3 BMW i3 at 604 and new #7 VW e-Up! at 300 units have much to do with the dip on Renault sales.

The e-Golf should do even more to pull EV sales from the current models.

It seems the whole lease the battery forever concept is not working out well for Renault when there is competition.

The current Focus Electric, only on sale in Germany moved a whopping 10 units. But this should change with the launch of the new 2015 model in 4th qtr with upgrades and expected price drop to be competitive in the European market against the e-Golf.

Maybe they should add the buying option, but I can understand the logic behind the lease.

If you now have a nissan leaf 2011 that is going to loose its last bar after the warranty has passed, you have a problem. Try to sell that car on the market and tell the buyer that if he wants a new battery hell have to pay 5000 euro or more. If you sell a Renault the new owner has nothing to worry about, it will probably also give a higher selling price.

Maybe it’s a difference in culture between Europe and America, but then again almost everyone in amerace leases the whole car instead of just the battery!

I thought it was the other way around.

Nissan allows for a purchase and a lease of the battery, even if you buy the car.

Renault only offers a lease of the battery, even if you buy the actual car, you still are on the hook for leasing(70 to 113 euros monthly) the battery forever. No option to buy the battery.

But with the new BMW i3 and VW e-Up! and upcoming e-Golf, you buy or lease the whole car for however many years available. No separate battery lease to worry about.

Clearly this is because the cheaper Nissan/Renault battery packs have no thermal protection. Which means they will degrade, by as much as 25% by 40k miles.

BMW/VW/GM/Ford/Tesla does not have that problem, because their slightly more expensive batteries have thermal protection to extend the battery life.

So clearly, if one is to actually buy an EV, if they have down their research, they will buy one with thermal protection.

This is not true. Some french users allready have 50000 km (32000 miles) with no loss of range.
