Renault Eolab Plug-In Hybrid Could Sell For Same Price As Clio (~$24,000)

Thierry Bollore, Renault’s chief competitive officer, was recently interviewed by Automotive News Europe on the concept Eolab model, which debuted at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

Renault didn’t say whether or not it will build such a car, but Thierry Bollore said that if Renault decided to green light it, then it could be priced similar to diesel-powered Clio.

Not bad for a plug-in hybrid with 66 km of range under NEDC.

“We know that in mass production this car it would not cost more than a Clio DCi 90hp,” Bollore told Automotive News Europe. The Clio DCi 90 starts at 18,500 euros ($23,900) in France.”

The other interesting statement is that carbon fiber isn’t the way to go for Renault, as the company prefers aluminum:

“Bollore said Renault purposefully avoided the use of expensive lightweight materials such as carbon fiber for the Eolab, which weighs 955kg.”

“It’s easy to put carbon everywhere, but if you are a customer what do you do if your carbon fiber door is broken? It’s a disaster. It costs a fortune. If it’s made of aluminum it’s easy because everyone knows how to repair it,” he said.

For now Renault is preparing to include some of the 110 innovations from Eolab into other production models.

The drivetrain consisting of a 75 hp 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, a 6.7 kWh battery and a clutchless three-speed transmission with an integrated electric motor probably will be seen in production soon – “is the sort of hybrid solution that will be seen on future Renault vehicles.

French cars have now drastically improved their reliability:

‘Japanese brands dominated the top of the table with marques including Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan producing some of the most reliable models on the market.

French carmakers – Citroën, Peugeot and Renault – come second in the reliability rankings with South Korea completing the top three – Hyundai and Kia amongst the country’s more dependable exports.

Japanese brands are most susceptible to axle and suspension problems, responsible for an average 25% of faults. French and South Korean vehicles however are more likely to develop electrical faults, at 29% and 22% of cases respectively.’

German cars have been trading on their reputation, and are now in a lousy 6th place!
That is only just ahead of:
‘Fix It Again, Toni!’

They have really taken their eyes off the ball in pursuit of fancy technology.

It is not clear if he is talking about price equality before or after the substantial French credits for PHEVs.

If it is after it is the same kind of deal as the existing Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which matches the diesel on price but only after subsidy, around £5k here in the UK.

The best thing about this design is the low aerodynamic drag. The Cd is 0.235 (IIRC) and the Cd with the 3 active elements is 0.227. The rear strakes in particular should be fixed elements in the lower drag configuration.
