Not to be outdone by NWG Automotive, who lead the way to be the first to donate an EV inside Vatican City; Renault decided to donate two custom EVs for Pope Benedict XVI.

The inside has room for four along with a removable top, detachable windows, and electric side steps.

Based on the Kangoo Maxi Z.E. platform, French coachbuilder Gruau retrofitted the EV with upgraded leather interior and a glassed in rear section for security.

Pope Benedict XVI’s security staff features the same layout as the Pope’s car, however it is painted to match their uniforms with a blue livery that features a white and yellow stripe on both sides.

Other custom features in both vehicles include opening roof, removable side windows, hinged rear doors, and electric folding door steps upon entry into the vehicle.

The vehicles were given to the Pope at his summer house in Castel Gandolfo. The ceremony took place on September 5 where CEO and Chairman of Renault and Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, was present to witness the event.

“This donation to His Holiness is a means for Renault to reaffirm its strong and durable commitment to sustainable development and respect for the environment,” said Monsieur Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the Renault Group.
