The new incarnation of refreshed Volkswagen up! finally lived to see also a new generation of electric version, the e-Up!

There are no changes in powertrain (still a 60 kW electric motor) or batteries (still 18.7 kWh) combined with face-lift, which we find a little disappointing.

The refresh brings subtle changes to the model, and includes a redesigned front bumper with unique C-shaped running lights, and a blue strip between the headlights. In the rear the bumper gets a new, more angled shame and larger diffuser panel.

But regardless to no hardware updates, the changes in physical appearance does give it a nicer and more refined look, which is positive.

In Germany e-up! the starts at €26,900, which drops to €22,520 after incentives. UK’s price is £20,780 (RRP OTR, incl. government grant).

Volkswagen’s highly praised new up! city car is now available to order in all-electric form as the new e-up! four seater joins the refreshed up! range in the UK.

Expanding on the extensive appeal of the new up!, which has already been roundly praised for its style, versatility and quality, the new e-up! builds on the standard car’s accomplished packaging with a zero emission solution.

With its 82 PS electric motor the e-up! boasts a peak torque figure of 210 Nm, equating to a brisk 0-62 mph time of 12.4 seconds and it will keep on going, where the law permits, to 80 mph.  The car boasts a maximum range of around 93 miles between charges.

This e-up!’s power derives from a lithium-ion battery pack located within the car’s floor and consisting of 204 cells, together rated at 374 volts and 18.7 kWh.  The motor is mated to a single-speed gearbox that is optimised for minimum friction.  The driveline is particularly quiet and compact as a result of the electric motor and the gearbox being integrated with very high quality intermeshing inside a single housing.

The battery weighs 230 kg but, despite this, the e-up! still weighs less than its internal combustion engined sibling, tipping the scales at 1,139 kg thanks to Volkswagen engineers’ extensive weight-saving measures.  The necessary variety of charging cables includes a fast charge connection which allows for up to 80 per cent of the battery’s capacity to be replenished in just 30 minutes.  Meanwhile, a full charge from a standard household plug takes nine hours.  Customers can purchase an optional wall box for home garage use, which provides a 3.6 kW supply and can recharge a battery in six hours.

Zero emission electric drive doesn’t mean compromising on comfort or convenience, either.  A strong line-up of factory-fitted equipment includes electronic air conditioning as standard, as well as cruise control and parking sensors.  The windscreen wipers function automatically, and when the sun goes down a dusk sensor automatically activates the headlights.

The new e-up! is available as a five-door, and fresh styling includes beefier front bumpers which house unique ‘C’ signature LED running lights that make the e-up! stand out from the crowd.  At the rear, a more angular bumper includes a prominent diffuser panel alongside a sharper tail light design.  The interior of the new e-up! features a leather-trimmed steering wheel, while chrome-trimmed interior door handles, air vent surrounds and instruments add a finishing flourish.

The new e-up! scores highly when it comes to bringing the online world into the cabin.  Like the new up! it features an innovative smartphone docking station which enables the driver’s phone to be turned into the car’s infotainment system.  Simply click the smartphone into the ‘Maps + More’ docking system on the centre console to unlock a host of features via the Volkswagen app.

The smartphone can be used to select and play music, or as a navigation system.  It can even display key data from the e-up!’s systems and tips from the Volkswagen Think Blue. Trainer – which coaches a driver in efficient driving techniques.

The smartphone connection is extended in the new e-up! thanks to Volkswagen’s Car-Net e-remote.  This gives the driver the power to manage the car’s charging process from their smartphone via the Volkswagen e-up! app.  They can also use the app to switch on their e-up!’s air conditioning remotely before getting in and review vehicle trip statistics, too.  A three-year subscription to the Car-Net e-remote service is included with the new e-up!.

The new e-up! is priced at £20,780 (RRP OTR) including the Government Plug-in Car Grant of £4,500.  Deliveries are expected to begin in October and the e-up! comes with a standard three-year warranty.  The vehicle’s battery comes with an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty, while the standard service interval is 20,000 miles or two years.

Currently, the e-up! is available from £275* per month via Volkswagen’s e-Solutions Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) scheme, with a £900 deposit contribution.  The deal is based on 6.4% APR representative, with full details available from Volkswagen Retailers.

The latest e-up! is a continuation of Volkswagen’s long history of electric mobility provision.  The first electric Golf, for instance, was launched fully 40 years ago, in 1976, badged as the CityStromer. Around 100 examples were built.

Now the e-up! joins the all-electric e-Golf in Volkswagen’s line-up of plug-in cars.  The Volkswagen range also includes the award-winning petrol-electric hybrid Golf GTE and Passat GTE models.  These four cars represent the start of a significant acceleration toward electro-mobility for Volkswagen.  The German manufacturer has stated, via its recently announced TOGETHER – Strategy 2025 programme, that it will introduce 30 additional electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2025.  And by that year Volkswagen expects purely battery-powered electric vehicles to account for a quarter of the global passenger car market.

Picture all the ICE car makers as a cartel, since 2000. They killed the first wave of BEVs. They gave us the Prius instead, only ONE model of hybrid for years. Then there was the Volt, undersold, too expensive and still a hybrid with a small AER. The Leaf and the i3 were also the only choices of BEV, too expensive, undersold, unavailable, not appealing. (Other BEVs were sold in such small numbers that I do not count them for my argument) Let alone the ludicrous (and numerous) PHEVs with 20 miles AER, they are only for compliance and greenwashing purposes. What I see is the cartel not improving the cars on purpose, while attempting to sell us hybrids instead. (Notice how none of the ICE car makers announces better specs than Tesla 3 years ago! never, even for 5 years ahead!) For the near future, they are repeating the same scam. There is ONLY ONE pure electric model announced with more than 200 miles for the next ~3 years. The Bolt will be produced in small numbers. It is too expensive for what it gives. I would agree that the car companies are contested at best when it comes to electric cars. I have always said that this was a fundamental advantage and that has not changed.

Tesla only makes evs, not like the legacy manufacturers who make all different kinds of vehicles.

Ever so slightly agree: Not everyone of us can heat our homes with 100% hydro, so as a practical matter most of us will continue to use ‘fossil fuel’.

Also, “WOZ”, as was mentioned here, has plenty of coin available. A BOLT is more valuable to him than an “S”.

In other words, if the BOLT was priced at $100,000 he would still buy one. You can buy 3 BOLTS for the price of a fancy model “S”, when including the US Fed tax credits the 3 cars would generate.

That is BEYOND a RAVE, which is why people here could only call WOZ ‘Old and Fat’, since they couldn’t come up with an intelligent response.

Mr. Rexxsee – they tell me you drive a 100% gasoline Prius.

Aren’t you more guilty than manufacturers such as GM who not only MAKE at least one totally BEV (currently the sparkev), but also made the volt and elr, and soon to come PHEV Cadillac CT6, all of which sip gasoline by the thimble-full?

A personal attack again? Tell me what is the CO² footprint of one individual with modest incomes riding a car with a pretty good MPG, scraping to buy a pure EV when his car will be 12 years old, compared to hundreds of thousands of deliberately unsold BEVs by companies with billions to play with?
I feel guilty of nothing at all knowing that I have and will influence many readers to go a little cleaner. I do my share for the rEVolution. You routinely praise GM’s laziness, (and only GM Mr. Howland) committing themselves in delaying the clean car era by selling hybrids instead of good long range affordable BEVs produced massively as they could have done ten years ago.

Along with their big brother Big Oil, THEY ARE SCREWING OUR ENVIRONMENT! DESTROYING OUR ECOSPHERES! More delays mean catastrophic dislocation of the living on our only planet.

By keeping my car 12 years, I am proud to NOT contribute to the global waste of resources.

Sigh. There aren’t fewer cars in the world because you don’t switch. Ever heard of used cars? The concept is that a person uses a car that was previously used by someone else. It’s pure genius! And it solves your supposed “problem”.

Meanwhile, get a bike dude. For someone who shoots so loudly and constantly about the immortality of the car makers it must create a lot of cognitive dissonance to drive around in a 100% gasoline powered Toyota!

When I bought the Prius back in 2007 it was the best choice.
I had this car accident in my youth you know, broken back and all… But for the last 8 years it made me very sick and handicapped. Revenues are very low since. Getting a used car won’t help to pay for my Model 3, the best choice there is. As we all know, they are still expensive (where I live) range sucks, and this money I won’t have for my Tesla. I live in a small clean village and have to travel a lot by car for my work, lot of highway also.
I know the Tesla is the best and will pay for itself. But for my modest income and my physical condition, it will be a feat!
Now with titanium screws in my spine, and over 60 years of age, bicycles and many other sports are now out of the question. Capice!

Well, Rexxsee, its just asking a question – that is pretty far from the personal attacks I’m subjected to, but OK, you make a point…

I lately like GM since two of their cars I have, have been quite reliable, and as far as not wasting resources, I’ve still got my original 2011 volt, as well as my original modified Schneider wall box. I’ve already described how my 2014 ELR is the most ‘electric’ car I’ve ever owned.

Before the 2011 Volt, I was frankly fed-up with GM, but decided to give them another chance with the new Volt. Glad I did.

Others have called you delusional, I have not, except perhaps calling attention to your points.

Both e-Golf and e-up have battery upgrades confirmed for January 2017.

The 25 Ah Sanyo/Panasonic cells will be replaced with 37 Ah cells that have the same volume and weight.

OK, so why bother with an extremely minor cosmetic-only refresh that will only sell for ~3 months…

That’s probably mid-2 digits units they will sell of this new version of the e-Up _wordwide_ (given it isn’t sold in North America & China).
Just the inventory hassle for the new parts makes it not worth it IMHO.

That said, I didn’t know the e-Up weighed less than the ICE Up — that’s actually nice engineering-wise.

Volkswagen e-Golf: 264 x 37 Ah x 3,7 V = 36,14 kWh

Theoretically the NEDC electric range should be increased from 190 km to 281 km. But the e-Golf is getting a more powerful and probably more efficient motor. Volkswagen will push the NEDC range to 300 km.

Volkswagen e-up: 204 x 37 Ah x 3,7 V = 27,93 kWh

Theoretically the NEDC electric range should be increased from 160 km to 236 km.

Nice….about $23k for a 100 mile EV city car. Where mileage is much lower and a 100 mile charge can last several days.

Compare that with the Leaf at about $19k with no battery.

Now 2 EVs for VW.

Meh.
Leaving aside slight reliability niggles that have beset the Zoe, I maintain that the Renault is the superior car.
More spacious, more range, and, crucially, not just cheaper on-paper but much more affordable (in terms of dealer/manufacturer offers).
The Zoe has done more for EV adoption than the e-Up! could ever possibly hope to achieve.
This is borne out in the sales where, according to ‘How Many Left’, there are only 154 e-Up! registered in the UK.
By contrast, there are 4339 Zoes.
(in case you were wondering, there are 12837 Leafs)

I’ve no real problem with the e-Up! as a car in the city-car class, just that it’s about £6000 too expensive. We all know that some people pay more for the badge (for some bizarre reason) but badge snobbery shouldn’t cost that much.

The cost premium of the e-Up! becomes an even greater mystery when you consider that – apparently – when the Up! was being designed, VW knew there would be an EV variant and factored this into the design.
