Pure Electric Mercedes-Benz AMG Variants A Future Possibility

Back in 2013, Mercedes-Benz sold the limited SLS AMG Electric Drive. It was a fully electric supercar that hinted at the future.

Flip forward to today and Mercedes-Benz hasn’t advanced on the performance electric car front, but that might change in the near future as M-B is now considering a new lineup of BEV AMGs.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive

Ola Kallenius, Mercedes’ research and development boss, spoke at the North American International Auto Show back in January. Quoting the exec:

“AMG has always been about driving performance and offering customers a superior experience, but at the same time — and I think this is the sweet spot of AMG — they are cars you can really drive every day. Electrification will find its way into AMG. It’s not impossible that you’ll have a fully electric version or an AMG variant of an EQ.”

Mercedes is expected to first implement a 48-volt mild hybrid system into its AMG lineup. That will likely be followed by broader full electrification of at least some AMG models.

Kallenius added:

“The SLS Electric Drive was a preview of what the future could look like. That was a research project, a know-how builder for AMG to get our heads around electrification. It’s just a matter of time until we go more and more electric.”

The more electric the better!

SLS has been available for years, if you have $600,000 it could be yours.

The gull wing doors on this Mercedes, are what originally inspired Elon to make his updated version of them for the Model X. Now that vehicle is going electric…

We appear to be coming full circle. 🙂

The sad part is these speciality vehicles are made only in few 100s and then closed. And the very purpose of reducing pollution is defeated. MB is a combustion engine company (with their Petrol & Diesel engines) at the core and they will never market the electric cars in higher volumes.

They just keep saying.
But at least they are selling 3 plugins now.

the SLS AMG benz-o is not a high volume car in any form. the point of this article is to point out that mercedes-benz intends to augment is EQ line with AMG variants. my suspicion is that AMG will probably go the FCEV/BEV hybrid route.
