Porsche expects that demand for electrified cars will be greater than previously anticipated and now has announced a new goal of 50% of sales to be all-electric or hybrids by 2025.

The German manufacturer already notes very high 60% share for plug-in hybrid versions of Panamera in Europe.

As more models will be offered in plug-in versions and all-new electric-only cars appear on the market (the first is the Mission E), plug-ins will become the most important branch in Porsche’s lineup.

At the Beijing Auto Show, Porsche representatives emphasized China’s role in the electric car push. China is and will remain the biggest market for plug-in cars in the foreseeable future.

“Porsche is now comfortable setting a goal for electrified models to comprise 50 percent of sales, double the figure predicted last month, as wider offerings and Chinese policies power demand, division sales chief Detlev von Platen said Wednesday.”

“The train for electric mobility has well and truly left the station,” von Platen said in an interview at the Beijing auto show. “China is and will remain the biggest market for electric cars for the foreseeable future.”

From article: “…[Porsche] announced a new goal of 50% of sales to be all-electric or hybrids by 2025.“

So Porsche’s goal is to 7 years from now have over 50% of its sales from some form of ICE cars.

What-If instead:

“..[Porsche] announced a new goal of 100% of sales to be all-electric by 2025.“

That unambiguous mission vision would better serve Porsche to organizationally focus on the task of surviving the EV transition and be perceived as a leader rather than a laggard.

Yup I know conventional wisdom says it’s not practical for Porsche to fully transition to EV in a 7 year time scale…

which is why Porsche should do it.

Just because conventional wisdom tells you that jumping off a cliff could be fatal … doesn’t mean you should do it.

If a wild fire is quickly advancing to your position jumping off a cliff may result in a few broken bones but life saving.

or better yet ditch “goal” add 5 years and simply say:

“..[Porsche] announced 100% of sales to be all-electric by 2030.“

It will rather be 100% by then. There is no reason to not sell all Porsches with a plug-in hybrid configuration (or better). As it is the plug-in versions has captured about half the total sales of the model where it’s been offered anyway already.

Customers themselves are telling Porsche, “Move on”.

Great news.

I am excited to have an Electric Boxster S finally.

Yes, more great news that a small startup EV only company has managed to leverage the technology and perception of EVs being desirable to the point that the large incumbent German Luxury/Sport divisions of their OEMs are now moving to react to the pressure from….Tesla.
