LA Auto Show Brings A New Crop Of Plug-Ins To America

LA Auto Show Brings A New Crop Of Plug-Ins To America

Despite the fact auto show promoters did their best to trip us up by having both the Tokyo Motor Show and Los Angeles Auto Show on the exact same press dates (5,500 miles apart), InsideEVs did manage to catch both shows in person.

And while a lot of our focus was on Tokyo as they featured many new electric vehicle offerings, we covered a lot of the plug-in action from LA as well.  Yet after all that, we still have some spare stories yet to cover (which we will bring you soon), but even more pictures that perhaps will never find a home around here.

So for those of you who can’t make the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, here is a pictorial walk through of all things new and electric in the LA.   Enjoy!

LOL i didnt even see the B-class or ELR… i went straight to the smart area and started talking to people ….the fricken “smart educators” are models that were hired by smart and they didnt know jack sh*t about the car, i did a better job informing people of the smarts in 15 minutes than they will do in the entire week being there rofl

Brandon

also they weren’t really that good looking to be “models” im way better looking than all of them lol serious, and they only had 1 electric smart, all the way in the back corner, with no options… FAIL

The Local Smart dealer around here is very tiny, but for some reason they have more ev’s to sell than all other dealerships in my area combined!! (something like 18 evs on the lot ready to be purchased or leased). They also knew very little about the car (hehe, especially the self appointed ‘expert’), but they were nice enough , and besides letting me test drive it, they also fed me a DeLuxe Lunch, gave me a free Smart Umbrella, also a $20 Starbucks debit card.\ What’s not to like? This was the best treatment i’ve EVER experienced at a dealer. Too bad the car only has 68 epa miles range (that means like 30 or so here in the winter time since the heater in the thing Blasts). They won’t be calling me, since I filled out their questionaire and I said the thing most important to me is “Range”. Notwithstanding that, the car is a real joy to drive and a Hoot. Any parents wanting to get their teenager’s feet wet in ev’s won’t be disappointed with the Smart ED. And its masculine enough that a kid won’t be embarrassed to drive it since its pickup is decent… Read more »

How can something called “ED” be described as “masculine”? 😉

Do you really take a 50% hit in range in the winter in either of your cars? I’m taking about 35-40% in my Leaf. And the heat pump in the MY13 wouldn’t help in the worst case, because the air is just too cold.

Oh, I didn’t even make the connection ’till you mentioned it.. The only people your age who have that problem are smokers. Yeah, the problem in buffalo as opposed to Syracuse is the air is very moist, hence the defroster MUST be run on high to see out the windshield. The volt is actually much worse, it killing the range from 42-43 miles in the spring and fall to around 17 in the wintertime (worst case for me is draining the battery after 6 miles).

The most economical way to use the Volt in the wintertime is actually counterintuitive. Let the engine run in normal mode when it wants to on days that it is very cold, and leave the heater on “Fan ONLY” with the temperature at 90 degrees. The combo of the cycling engine AND the continuously running heater fan actually extracts out most of the otherwise waste engine heat, while using very little gasoline.
