It’s time once again to take a look at plug-in electric vehicle sales in Canada.

The Chevrolet Volt had a break out month in June. May sales for the Volt were 59 units, but in June that figure jumped to a remarkable 120 units.  Volt sales shot up even higher in July with 150 units sold.

Back in April, the Nissan LEAF set an all-time record for single-month sales in Canada with 127 LEAFs sold. Nissan followed that up with a strong 112 LEAFs sold in May. In June, LEAF sales remained above 100 with 101 units sold. But in July, LEAF sales fell below 100 units at 94 sold for the month.

However, it still seems quite likely that the Tesla Model S outsold both of the plug-in models listed above in July. In March, Model S sales were 250 units. Then, in April, Model S sales checked in at 167. That was followed by 178 sold in May and a remarkable 242 units sold in June.  July’s figures aren’t available yet, but we do expect the Model S to be in either first or second place on the sales chart.

Meanwhile, sales of the BMW i3 remained higher than usual with 43 units sold in July. Typical monthly volume is in the 20-30 unit range, but the past 3 months have seen sales at above the typical volume.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV, with typically monthly sales in Canada in the single digits, sold 8 units in July in Canada. That’s down 8 units from the 16 i-MiEVs sold in June.

Here are the rest of the March’s results from the typically low-volume sellers in Canada:

  • Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid: Unknown at this time, no longer reported for Canada (We estimate ~3-5 units)
  • Cadillac ELR: 2
  • Ford’s PHEV sales are unknown at this time. Typical monthly volume is ~ 15 C-Max Energis and ~15 Fusion Energis.
  • Likewise, Focus Electric sales are small, in the single digits most months and sometimes even zero.

We have no sales data on the other remaining plug-in electric models.

Looking at the YTD figures, the Model S is the clear leader with estimated YTD sales at over 1,000 units. The Nissan LEAF is number two with YTD sales of 582 and the Volt is #3 with YTD sales of 575 units. Next, it’s the BMW i3 at 203 units.

So roughly 2500 plug-ins sold so far in Canada. Out of 1,111,283 vehicles, that’s a market share of 0.2%. IOW, not very much.

No, no, no, Kdawg,
Over 4500 Volts, 2500 Leafs and about 1000 Teslas already sold in Canada to date. And about half of those are sold in Quebec.
On top of that, we don’t have anything close to the deals you can get in the U.S.

Of course we could do much better but, GM and Nissan do not supply enough so very few are ready to deliver on dealer’s lot.

Random stats on Canada all-time:

Net registered since 2010 in Canada: 13,875 (~3,316 YTD)

Below: Plug-ins with more then 750 total sales

Model S: 2,734 (+/- 70 units)

kdawg, as a matter of interest what is the EV market share for your country?

The US usually floats around 0.70% with a high of 0.84%. This is also too low.

off-topic: BYD Qin sells 4.030 units in July

2015 Volt – 0% for 84 months. It works. And no worry about finding a charging station. Looks like a lot of people are waiting for more range on the next LEAF but I wonder if Nissan limits supply to a certain number of cars. TESLA makes the best electric car available. It should be top for sales. Canadians drive around in $65000 trucks burning $500 a month in gas. Price doesn’t seem to be the issue…range is.

Education is the problem. Perception is reality and the general perception is either that EVs are not available that match current ICE cars or that they are impractical. They’re eminently practical of course… but that isnt the perception. We need to get butts in seats.

I think the ability to handle the longer winters is more of an issue. I own a 2012 Volt and the heat is not good until the engine comes on. Electric heat is not as good as the original heater core and that is what takes over in the Volt when the engine comes on. The 2013 Volts have the direct mode of turning the engine on. With the 12 I have to use mountain mode and wait for half the charge to be used and than the engine comes on.

Certainly a factor in Canada more than the U.S.

An exception would be Vancouver which has similar weather to Portland and Seattle, which are great for plug-ins. Plenty of money there as well.

0.2 % of all car sales ytd… this is what the US would be getting had it elected republicans back in 2008. And then again, President McCain wouldn’t have forced the big three to go electric through the bailout… meaning that I’m not even sure EVs would even be selling in the US.

We in Canada have elected an oily conservative government, and they have successfully made our country dependent on oil… as everybody else is trying to wean off oil. Sigh.

Canada is at about 0.3% of passenger cars. The U.S. is heavily influenced by California whose EV population is at least double the next highest state WA. Weather is a big factor. If there was a way to compare to USA states bordering Canada, I would be guessing it’s very close. US Federal EV credits is double those on Canada, and only half of the provinces have any rebates.

There is NO federal incentive in Canada for electric cars.
