Oprah Winfrey Buys A Tesla Model S

Test driving my new Tesla with dealer Dan. Love it!!

Who gets more high profile (and free) love than Tesla Motors?

Now Oprah Winfrey is behind the wheel of a Model S – and her 28.8 million followers know about it with this recent tweet:

“Test driving my new Tesla with dealer Dan.  Love it!!”

Not sure Tesla appreciates the confusing “dealer” reference, but I’m sure they will let Oprah slide on that one.

Hat tip to sven!

Most of her viewers and followers probably can’t afford one.

    1. Foo says:

Most of her viewers probably also won’t quite understand that they car doesn’t use any gasoline.

You try to explain this to certain people (I have about my car) and their head kinda explodes. They keep asking, “You mean it’s a hybrid, like a Prius”.

      1. Aaron says:

I have had the exact same interactions with people too. Even the mechanic who gave my car its inspection said, “no gas — at all?”

      2. Scramjett says:

Same here. An acquaintance of mine saw me getting in my Leaf not long after I had gotten in and he comes up and asks me, “hey, is that one of those new hybrids?” I paused for a moment because I had thought he was a bit more informed than that.

The 2 Most amusing dumb things people who should know better have done with my leaf:

        Used car salesman:
“They’re lying its a hybrid, if it doesn’t have an engine it won’t run” – he spend 10 mins looking for the fuel cap.

        Nissan service included:
Free oil filter and oil change, but they charged me $5 to charge the car from the free charging station outside their dealership. I think what really hurt is they refused to give me my free oil filter (despite being listed and me asking for it) and they forgot to turn off the timer on the car.

    2. Robb Stark says:

Most of her viewers and followers will be able to afford a Model 3.

Mind share is almost as important as sales today because it leads to sales tomorrow.

      1. See Through says:

With a $49/mo lease deal, I might get one.

        1. The only person you’re fooling is yourself, See Through. At some point you gotta ask yourself: “Highest Consumer Reports rating ever (broke the scale actually). Highest Consumer Reports survey rating ever (98%). Why do I spend so much time online bashing this car? I must look like…” Well, you’ll figure it out, eventually.

      2. Kevin Cowgill says:

        That’s way less touchy-feely than a Vulcan mind-meld.

Not just them, but the general public as well. But, I agree that mind share and awareness are critical, so more exposure of EV’s in the minds of the public is better. It would be cool if she were so enamored of her new car that she also let people know of Drive Electric Week, so they could all go out and see live EV’s for themselves.

      1. Just_Chris says:

Leptoquark, there is something a little upsetting you need to know, her viewers are the general public.

You, me and the rest of the people commenting here are a tiny minority of the population, mostly screaming in a vacuum.

I live in Australia, statistically speaking an Australian is about 10 times more likely to die in a car crash than buy a Nissan leaf.

david murray wrote: “Most of her viewers and followers probably can’t afford one” (referring to a tesla model S)…that means that oprah viewers have a lot in common with the participants in this forum.

You get a Tesla! you get a Tesla! Everyone in the audience gets a brand new Tesla!!!

    1. Jeff Songster says:

You beat me to that punch line…

    2. See Through says:

This is not the giga-farce of gigafactory, that every state gets a mini giga factory 🙁

      1. Ohai thar! Still posting things that are completely irrelevant to the discussion I see!

  3. kdawg says:

Sounds like Oprah had an “Aha moment”.

  4. Foo says:

I can see the episode now…

And you get a free Tesla… and you get a free Tesla… and YOU get a free Tesla! TeeeeeeessssllllllaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

    1. ClarksonCote says:

That is one Oprah filming I would gladly attend as an audience member.

    2. Scramjett says:

Ha ha,yeah, that’ll get expensive REAL quick!

    3. kdawg says:

And they look under their seats to find this

      1. Foo says:

        Hahaha…. not even a Model S.

  5. mr. M says:

He sells cars, so isn’t he a dealer?

    1. Alonso Perez says:

      He’s a salesman.
A dealer is a middleman, like a re-seller. A salesman is an employee who sells.

      1. mr. M says:

Thanks, i didn’t knew there was a difference between dealer and salesman. In germany we mostly use “Verkäufer” (=seller) for both.

    2. Pushmi-Pullyu says:

No, Tesla doesn’t have dealers. Most auto makers sell their cars to dealers. Tesla sells cars directly to their customers.

  6. turboro says:

Lets talk about what Oprah can do: With her influence and presence, people will maybe search what a “Tesla” is. With one message in her show or blog like “electric cars changed my view on future transportation, you should get one yourself”, she can change the common mind-set and remove inner hurdles at my people that never thought different before.

  7. Speculawyer says:

Nice to see Oprah promote something good. She’s promoted so much pseudoscience and woo-woo over the years that she may be have been a negative on society.

    1. sven says:

And lets not forget her yo-yo diets.

  8. Westchester EV says:

Sorry … Our family are huge Oprah fan and followers, had my S since 2013.

Lot’s of Oprah followers can certainly afford an S. We all know the stats, no maintenance except wiper blades and tires. No three times a year visits to the dealer, oil change etc. Wake up fully juiced every morning.

  9. carcus says:

With Oprah squeezed into the drivers seat, … I’m thinking the Model S will seem a little less ludicrous.
