Europe’s Chevrolet Bolt EV – the renamed Opel Ampera-e is now in production.

The German brand shows us the assembly process in the new video, proving the tag line of:

“This isn’t some science project that is year’s away.”

The Opel Ampera-e is built alongside the Bolt EV at General Motor’s Orion facility in Michigan.

First deliveries are expected in Norway in June, followed by rollout in rest of Europe.

The Ampera-e has a 383 km/238 mile real-world range rating (according to the EPA) from a 60 kWh battery.

What do you think could be the impact of a sale of Opel to PSA?

The historic chance to fix Opel would have been to reinvent it as an electric car company based on the bolt producing in Europe ahead of tesla that still needs to export from the US. Sounds like they are not going that route and also will export from Michigan plant instead which if Trump stays in the office and causes a trade war may be hindered by import tariffs.

So the impact IMHO is less bolts on the roads in Europe and a better chance for European carmakers to catch up on long range electric cars.

On the flip side it strengthens the GM Brand if they sell them as Bolt in Europe.

Given the recent comments from Mary Barra, I wonder if the deal they are exploring is to sell Vauxhall and Opel’s Gas division to PSA but keep the branding and one manufacturing plant for EV only production?

It’s probsbly a matter of capacity. There’s no point in firing up a European factory if Michigan can cover the demand.

I’m admittedly naive on the subject, but we get hit with tariffs all the time on products we export, including automobiles.

It’s why the Volt was so darn expensive in many countries outside the United States, yet the US doesn’t seem to have any tariffs on foreign auto manufacturers.

So on the surface, I welcome tariffs from foreign automakers, just like what is done to us.

Stepping back, import taxes are really part of what is needed to maintain our level of luxurious living in the US. Otherwise you lose more and more jobs to countries that pay less for the same work.

We have a bit of a “house of cards” in the US with respect to our standard of living, so I don’t really know that any approach can keep us in such economic good standing superior, but techniques like import tariffs can help.

Exchange rates and the strength of the dollar relative to other currencies, also make the Bolt expensive to buy in export markets. China is known to manipulate its currency, keeping it artificially low to boost exports. A couple of years ago, Japan devalued the Yen to make its exports more competitive/affordable. The weaker Yen was the pillar of Prime Minister Abe’s economic policies, aka Abenomics.

I’m of 2 minds about Trump, but his plan to eliminate corp income taxes on Exports means GM could drastically lower the price of the Opel so that Europe would get a reasonably priced car even with some tariffs added there.

There are tariffs on import cars into the US. So much so that it is more profitable for those foreign companies to build there cars in the US hence is why most Toyotas, Nissans and Hondas are built here.


Read up on the Chicken Tax, which is a US tariff of 25% on imports of light trucks. This is why Toyota and Nissan have truck/SUV plants in the US. Also why Ford imports the Transit Connect with seats installed as a passenger vehicle and immediately removes them in the US for the truck version before selling it.


It hardly matters… Peugeot is going to buy OPEL.. Peugeot and the whole PSA group is loss making… Opel is loss making.. loss+loss does not make win…

In turn, I wouldn’t be surprised if largest minority holder Dongfeng purchases PSA in the future with a little help from the Chinese government.


The US part will have less responsibility and income. It could be that GM is not making enough money and that is why it is selling parts of it!


They are selling the parts that aren’t making money.. AKA, Opel.

Though, nothing is official yet, just all talk.


Getting rid of forever-unprofitable opel is smart business. GM will be much stronger because of it. The only drawback is for Buick, which has been using opel designs for their cars. I guess we’ll see Buick shift to the Asian GM design studios.

The way i read it is there won’t be an ampera-e anymore.


I wonder if Chevy will sell Bolt EVs in Europe.. IF Opel goes away. Chevy pulled out of the UK last year (though they still sponsor Manchester United)


Chevy is in a heap of trouble man, that won’t happen. Usually you have your nose to the ground, at least on Chevy, but here you’re barking up the wrong tree. They are cuttin’ and runnin, imho.

Most likely for some time frame. But the question is, how will GM sell vehicles in Europe, specifically EVs like the Ampera-E/Bolt


Maybe thats why they decided to not produce it in Europe and also why they are estimating so few units sold globally.

Because if they sold Opel, there would be no more Bolts in Europe. Maybe they were just waiting for someone to buy it and bringing the Bolt to Europe was only their failsafe plan, if they found no buyer.


Perhaps GM will re-institute the “Chevrolet” brand in Europe, specifically focusing on their evolving EV product line that may become VERY popular (and profitable!) in Europe going forward (if Norway’s response to the Ampera-e is representative). Shedding their existing Opel baggage, they can re-build fresh, perhaps with an opportunity to develop new marketing/sales/service models that would be more friendly to 21st century EV sales (and perhaps eventually transfer those models state-side, too!).


But that was alreay Opels plan. They wanted to focus on EVs from now on. The plan was to stop selling ICEs before 2030, whihc would probably mean the’d stop development in tthe next 2-3 years or so to focus only on EVs.

If they wanted back in the market with Chevy, GM would have to find new dealers, or at least open their own stores and service facilities. AndI doubt that selling American built mass market EVs will be very profitable. Even Tesla does the final assamby of the S and X in Europe and they have plans for an European factory, once the 3 is running.

So if GM planned to sell EVs in Europe, why sell Opel, build everything new and risk a very bad reputation for selling Opel, which has factories all over Europe.


Unfortunately that is the most propable outcome. No Ampera-e or Bolt for Europe.

We have very good CCS coverage here and it’s rapidly expanding, but we don’t get any long range BEVs to take advantage of this infrastructure. This is stupid.

If you live in europe and you want an ampera e i woulnt let gm’s selling opel to diswade you.


Opel in Norway has more than 3700 orders, increasing by the day.


As a side note: I hate seeing huge spark showers when showing welding robots working on cars. You never want sparks when doing spotwelds….

Exactly. Those welds would be so bad that those bodies are probably scrap.


Do do thé people herec Witherspoon more insight think, That GM wount be selling any of its cars in Europe? Opel is their only brand here since they pulled Chevy brand in 2016.

And on the subject of the excellent Bolt.

The Mulroney sticker on mine says that US/NA part content is only 24& and that the rest is mainly South Korean of course.

So my point is what will the proposed “Border Adjustment” tax or other tariffs do to the Bolts price/availability?

And then there is also the frightening potential for a war with North Korea which would absolutely shut down anything coming out of South Korea for a long time.

Scary thought and I hope GM has a contingency plan to move that other 76& of parts content back to the US or at least out of SK.

If Opel is positioning itself as a new and old opel. Then it would make sense for GM to sell the ‘Old opel’ to PSA and shed that weight so they can make BEVs in europe and move forward with the brand.

Bringing the Bolt under the Opel brand is a strong statement in the direction.

I seriously doubt it makes sense for PSA to acquire Opel. There would be a culture clash, besides the fact that the brands compete directly — their models are not complementary, esp. Opel and Citroën who are both low(ish)-cost carmakers (for the USians in the audience, Opel are significantly cheaper than VWs).
The “Opel as electric brand” is a non-starter as well: The Ampera-E is a complete rebadge, and none of the engineering or production is by Opel. PSA has had its own EV program for a couple of years, a cooperation with a Chinese company to build PHEVs and BEVs on its existing platforms, in addition to selling Bolloré-tech cars and rebadged i-MiEVs .
