Nissan announced a price reduction for its LEAF in Japan.

The reduction, effective March 28, is ¥257,000 ($2,523 USD) on all grades (S, X and G and on Aero Style versions).

The base S is now priced from ¥2,872,800 ($28,202 USD).  After deducting the maximum purchase subsidy of ¥530,000, the price comes in at ¥2,342,800, or approximately $23,000.

Nissan was happy to additionally announce that as of the end of March, 820 fast chargers were installed at its dealerships in Japan.  The total number of fast chargers in Japan is ~2,000.

Often what we have seen happen in the past with Nissan LEAF pricing announcements in Japan is a similar action taken later in the US – hopefully that trend continues.

So what does this mean for Europe and the US, or did Nissan manage to tidy things up at its Oppama plant?

I can go for another round of price cuts for the Leaf/Volt/FocusEV/etc since my lease ends in Nov!

Wow! This makes me wonder how much profit they were making on the 2011/2012 versions in order to be able to sustain these drops in prices. Unless they were seriously able to reduce production costs that much!

I think automakers have been deceiving people about their gross margins on EVs, because if they became public then subsidies would go away.

Does it make sense for Nissan to be paying $400/kWh when Tesla is below $250/kWh along with other suppliers? Does it make sense for inverters to cost a lot when we know how cheap IGBTs are? Electric motors are pretty cheap, too, despite Nissan using permanent magnets. I think the whole electric powertrain – battery/package, motor, inverter, charger, cabling – costs less than $10,000.

Manufacturers want to get as much profit as they can at first because early adopters pay more.

Man, if Nissan is able to drop the price a similar amount in the USA, the car will be free for 2-year leases in GA (and other states with a $5k rebate like Colorado)

I am crossing my fingers for an announcement when they start manufacturing the “hot” battery very soon now, it would be a nice surprise.

Not quite – Colorado is “up to $6k” but the formula for leases means it’s about $1k or a bit more for a LEAF.

Two important factors impact the actual credit value in Colorado – MSRP of the base model and battery size in kWh. If the 2015 drops in price the credit goes down, but if the battery size increases it goes back up.

This price cut could be the result of falling battery prices. The logic is that if they say batteries are costing them $300 to $250 a kilowatt to make. If the price goes down by $90 dollars a kilowatt to $210 to $160 dollars a kilowatt. This could be where the price cut for the car could be coming from with out hurting over all profitably of the car. Also a price cut of $2500 would help raise sales in what is looking like a sluggish market. Also this addresses that the car can only go 80 miles on a charge.

Over all I hope they do this in the US in that it will compensate if say Gerogia where to lower their EV tax program down from $5000 to $3000 or $2000 pure EV. Also in the states were there are no EV grants it would help lift up sales.

I wouldn’t pin the price cut to the battery costs. It’s more the overall production costs due to increased volume.

Hopefully this and the positive sales data in the uk/us/japan is a sign that nissian have unblocked their supply chain and can now produce the leaf reasonably unconstrained at their 3 global factories. It would be really nice to see nissian start “selling” the leaf globally. The states appears to have seen most of the good deals so far with the rest of us having to fight just to get a test drive. Hopefully that will change and we will see some massive growth sales numbers across the globe.

Nissan is serious to be the world leader in electric vehicles.

Exactly. And I have to wonder how much more they’ll have to rack up in sales before some other companies (*cough* Honda and Toyota *cough*) feel compelled to get serious about EVs.

On this same front, one vehicle that I think could push T&H in the right direction is the Soul EV. A funky little mini-SUV that sells well in both gasoline and EV versions could go a long way toward making the light come on over the head of some executives at other companies.
