In the wake of the whole Tesla Model S charging adapter recall that wasn’t really a recall, NHTSA deputy administrator David Friedman had a few comments to make.

When interviewed at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Friedman commented:

“We believe they [electric vehicles] don’t pose any greater risks than gasoline-fueled vehicles.”

“Do they pose different risks? Certainly.”

“People aren’t used to the new challenges that electric vehicles pose.  We’re taking this issue seriously. We want to make sure electric vehicles are safe.”

His comments weren’t directed at Tesla, but rather in response to a question posed on electric vehicle safety.  The question, however, stemmed from the Tesla Model S fires and the recent news of the charging adapter recall.

Notice that Friedman did not state that EVs pose less/more risk?  His words seem well scripted to us.

ok…

What @ev said…

Riding a horse has risks

Staying at home too :/

Reading articles and reader posts is a risk too. Of wasting my time. 🙂 or maybe I could go blind and burst into flames via spontaneous human combustion. I guess they better recall the internet.

Hey, at least they aren’t screeming about exploding batteries recently. They don’t want to come out and say that electric cars are safer than ICE cars because they’re a scare agency, but they have backed off a bit on the fear mongering. I am sure there are huge amounts of government people who need to work on this electric vehicle safety issues for at least the next couple of decades, and then will get the definitive answer from them.

Well I can safely say that according to statistics that electric cars have no greater serious injury and deaths per miles driven. (i.e. Tesla: none). What a mealy-mouthed bureaucrat.

According statistics Moon rockets are even safer vehicles than electric vehicles, because no Moon astronaut has ever died while flying.

Tell that to Komorov’s family… 🙁

Note to self: Do not try to plug in charger while under water.

Did this NHTSA gay try that? I hope he does.
