Tesla And Turo Have A New Way To Get People Hooked On FSD
Turo hosts will soon be able to link their Tesla account to confirm to renters which cars have FSD enabled.
- Turo hosts can now link their Tesla account to their Turo account, allowing Turo to confirm which cars have Full Self-Driving (Supervised) equipped.
- Tesla models that qualify for FSD but do not have it equipped will be eligible for one month of the service free.
- The revised interface launches on October 28.
Car-rental service Turo has partnered with Tesla to display which cars on its platform come with Full Self-Driving (Supervised) enabled. If you’ve ever wanted to try out FSD, then things have gotten a little easier. Importantly, the arrangement could also help Tesla boost its FSD subscriber base at a time when its vehicle sales have flatlined.
FSD-enabled Tesla models on Turo aren’t a new thing. However, this new setup allows Tesla owners to link their accounts to Turo and share data directly, confirming for sure which Tesla models available for rent are equipped with FSD. Before, we just had to go off the owner’s word or the description in the rental car’s listing.
For Turo hosts who aren’t paying for FSD, Tesla is offering a one-month free trial of the software. Renters who reserve an FSD-enabled car will receive a Turo-created disclaimer that they must supervise the vehicle at all times.
The deal could give people another reason to rent a Tesla on Turo. In a press release, the rental company said that people are very interested in “driverless” vehicles, but have not had the exposure to them. It said that 55% of Americans are interested in driverless technology for travel, while that number jumps to 71% for Gen Zers. FSD isn’t a fully autonomous, eyes-off, hands-off system, but it still is an impressive piece of technology. Turo says that the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are already its third and fourth most-rented cars.
The announcement also comes as Tesla pulls out all the stops to reel in more subscribers to FSD. The automaker now offers 30-day free trials, and it's been posting marketing videos on X spotlighting customers who love the feature. It has redesigned showrooms to push FSD harder. It may be working. On last week's earnings call, the company said that 75% of North American Tesla buyers this past Q3 opted to pay for FSD, up from 55% in Q2. It also shared that out of roughly 10 million cars sold globally, about 1.7 million of those owners have opted to pay for FSD.
The revised Turo interface that shows Tesla vehicles with guaranteed FSD launches on October 28.
