There’s still a lot we don’t know about Ford’s upcoming Fathom electric pickup, but one thing is certain: the company has opened a list, enabling prospective customers to register their interest in the compact EV.

People who register on the company’s website will receive a preorder invite when the time comes, presumably ahead of people who haven’t registered. This allows die-hard fans to reserve one of the first production Fathom EVs. Preorders will open to the public in early 2027, and the first deliveries are expected in late 2027.

The Fathom is Ford’s chance to prove that it knows what it’s doing. With the F-150 Lightning out of the picture and the E-Transit and Mustang Mach-E hanging on by a thread in the U.S., a compact and affordable pickup sounds like the right bet.

Sized roughly the same as the successful Maverick on the outside but as big as a Toyota RAV4 on the inside, the Fathom promises to make full use of its revolutionary platform. We still don’t know how the truck looks, but there’s a fair bit of information that has made its way through Ford’s trickling stream.

The four-door EV will come standard with a single, rear-mounted electric motor, but dual-motor all-wheel drive will also be offered. To keep costs down, Ford will use a 400-volt electrical architecture instead of an 800V setup that enables faster charging. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that are known to be resilient and cheap to build will provide motivation, though the driving range is unknown.

Ford didn’t say how much capacity the battery would offer, but it hinted that it would be about 15% smaller than the BYD Atto’s, which would result in roughly 51 kilowatt-hours of usable energy.

The price is another known variable. Ford said the Fathom will start at $29,945, including a $1,595 destination charge. It’s more expensive than the Slate Truck, but where Slate bets on extreme simplicity and plenty of accessories, Ford wants to offer a decent list of standard features on the Fathom. A large, high-resolution touchscreen with native Apple Maps, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto will be fitted to all Fathom EVs. Ford’s affordable electric pickup will also come with all the necessary hardware for BlueCruise, the automaker’s hands-free driver assistance system, though the system is expected to be enabled for a monthly subscription.

Bi-directional charging, a digital key, and a front trunk are also promised standard features on the Ford Fathom.

The Ford Fathom will be assembled at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, which used to make the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair crossovers. After a $2 billion upgrade, the facility has been converted to build EVs using the Ford Universal EV Production System, which ditches the traditional assembly line that was popularized by Henry Ford a century ago.

With the new assembly system, three separate lines run in parallel, building the car in sections. At the end, the three sections are joined together, and the vehicle is finished.
