BYD's New 3-Row SUV Brings 5-Minute Flash Charging To European Families

The BYD Atto 8 can recharge from 10-70% in 5 minutes, and hit 97% in under 10.

Charging speed is arguably more important than range. Because if you can refill your battery in five minutes, who really cares if it has 250 miles or 400? With the BYD Atto 8 SUV that debuted at the 2026 Paris Motor Show on Monday, the Chinese automaker is betting that it can win over European customers with blazing-fast fill-ups.

The Atto 8 packs the automaker's 115 kWh second-generation Blade battery. With it, it'll get around 405 miles of WLTP-rated range (the U.S. EPA is far stricter, so it'd be rated lower here), an impressive figure for a seven-seat SUV. However, that number is less important than how fast the Atto 8 can reach it on a fast charger. In reasonable ambient temps, the Atto 8 can charge from 10-70% state-of-charge (SoC) in just five minutes, BYD says. Add four more minutes and it'll reach 97% SoC. In super cold temperatures, as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit, it'll take 12 minutes.

That soundly beats any non-Chinese EV on the European market.

The Atto 8 is the first BYD EV in Europe equipped with the automaker's Flash charging tech, which it first unveiled earlier this year. Its own Denza Z9GT was revealed with the same tech earlier this year. So technically, the Denza was first, but this is the first BYD-branded car with Flash charging.

Of course, to get that sort of speed, you need the right kind of charger. The company wants to install 3,000 of its T-shaped Flash chargers BYD's across Europe by the end of 2027. So while such rapid charing won't be available for everyone right away, it will become more common.

What do you think?

I'm not sure how many European customers will want the big three-row Atto 8, as that's the sort of vehicle that's more popular here in America. But for Europeans who do like big SUVs, the Atto 8 certainly has the specs to make them happy. The basic rear-wheel drive version has the 405 miles of range, but the dual-motor Excellence AWD has around 374 miles. The Excellence has 764 horsepower and hits 62 mph in 4.9 seconds, though. It has a nice looking, if a bit generic looking interior with more than enough space and luxury for most families.

With that sort of power, luxury, and charge speed, the Atto 8 could be a perfect electric family car, especially as more Flash chargers continue to pop up.
