America’s Biggest Non-Tesla EV Fast Charging Network Just Hit A New Milestone

Electrify America’s footprint might not be growing as fast as some rivals, but it’s enough to keep it on top.

  • Electrify America’s DC fast charging network keeps growing.
  • The second-largest operator in the U.S. now has over 6,000 high-powered charging ports.
  • Compared to last year, that’s a solid 16% increase.

Electrify America, the second-largest DC fast charging network in the United States, isn’t resting on its laurels and continues to expand, even as EV sales have been lukewarm over the past 12 months.

The company, which is second only to Tesla’s Supercharger network, now has over 6,000 charging ports across the country. According to the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), EA now operates 6,029 fast charging ports across 1,191 sites in the U.S.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that there are over 6,000 individual stalls or 6,000 individual plugs, as Electrify America’s stations sometimes have stalls with a single port and a single connector, while other stalls have two ports and four connectors. For instance, some of the Wawa-branded Alpitronic chargers deployed recently in Pennsylvania have two ports and four connectors. Each port has a CCS1 and a NACS connector, but only two EVs can charge at the same time from the same stall.

Compared to this time last year, the number of ports on Electrify America’s network has grown by 16%, while the number of stations has increased by roughly 10%, as noted by EV Charging Stations. That’s a steady pace, but other competitors have deployed significantly more ports and are working to kick EA out of its place in the rankings. According to Paren, Electrify America had 6.7% of the DC fast charging ports in the U.S. and deployed a total of 202 ports in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, ChargePoint, the third-largest fast charging operator in the country, deployed 333 ports and had an all-time market share of 6.1%. Walmart’s new charging network, however, installed more ports than any non-Tesla company in Q2, though its overall footprint is still small compared to the big-timers. According to the AFDC, Walmart has 110 stations and a total of 916 charging ports, but it’s growing rapidly, with thousands of 400-kilowatt stalls planned for installation by 2030.

Electrify America is also leaning on high-powered chargers, with most of its stalls delivering 350 kW. A handful of 150 kW and 400 kW chargers are also in operation, according to DCFC Tracker.

The company recently ditched account balances in favor of simpler direct billing, which means each charging session will be billed automatically directly from the user’s preferred payment method.
