• Stellantis has axed its plug-in hybrids in North America. 
• The Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid are all now discontinued. 
• Stellantis is focusing on hybrids and extended-range EVs with gas generators.

Stellantis is pulling the plug on its plug-in hybrid vehicles in North America, The Drive reported on Thursday. 

That means the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Chrysler Pacifica PHEV are all discontinued starting with the 2026 model year. 

"With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, and focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs," a Stellantis spokesperson told The Drive.

They were some of the best-selling PHEVs in the U.S., but the Jeeps in particular had quality issues and faced numerous recalls. In November, Jeep recalled its PHEVs over a battery issue and warned owners not to park inside or charge their vehicles until a fix became available. 

"Customer demand" may indeed be part of the decision. After all, buyers of these PHEVs can no longer take advantage of the $7,500 EV tax credit. Before, Chrysler buyers could get that federally funded discount on purchases or leases. Most recently, plug-in Jeeps qualified only when leased. But under earlier tax-credit rules, they also benefited when purchased outright. Now, a big driver of demand is gone. 

But laxer regulations are potentially a bigger part of the equation—not just as it related to today's news, but in the many EV cancellations we've seen lately. Between the neutering of Corporate Average Fuel Economy rules and the suspension of California's EV sales requirements, companies don't really need to prioritize electric vehicles and other fuel-efficient options anymore. 

So we add the Jeeps and Chrysler to the growing list of plug-in cars that have been claimed by the great EV pullback. Others include the Ford F-150 Lightning, Acura ZDX and Nissan Ariya. 

There's good news, despite the cancellations. Tons of interesting new electric and electrified cars are coming out this year. And that includes models from Stellantis with serious potential: The Ram 1500 REV truck and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer SUV, two plug-ins with gasoline range extenders, are launching this year.
