Now we know which of the two is advancing quicker.
During the spectacular and content-rich Tesla Battery Day, Elon Musk revealed that the progress at the Tesla Giga Austin in Texas is even faster than the Tesla Giga Berlin in Grünheide near Berlin in Germany.
The latest U.S. gigafactory in Texas is expected to be bigger than any other Tesla site so far - at least the plot is huge and already four nameplates were assigned to the factory.
The plant is under construction just over two months since announcement now (most of the time the company had to spend on reclaiming and leveling the ground).
In Germany the works are also progressing quickly thanks to outstanding localization with the railway and the use of prefabricated elements. However, valuable time was lost because the issues with permissions and a redesign of foundation concept.
Beside the two full blown construction sites in Texas and Germany, Tesla is also near to an end with the 2nd phase of Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai. This factory already is able to produce some 150,000-200,000 Model 3, and within several months should start ramping up of the Model Y at potentially similar volume.
Tesla Gigafactory 5 in Austin, Texas:
- announced on July 23, 2020
- Semi: in development. To be launched in 2021 in Texas (according to Q2 call)
- Cybertruck: in development, unveiled in late 2019, production from late 2021
- Model Y/Model 3: an additional production site in the U.S.
Tesla Gigafactory 4 (aka Tesla Giga Berlin) at brief:
- located in the Berlin-area (in Grünheide, Brandenburg, Germany), near the new airport
- to produce Model 3/Y starting in 2021 with the Model Y
- will produce also batteries (for sure modules/packs) and powertrains
- expected volume of 500,000 annually (unofficial target), initially 150,000
- expected investment of €4 billion (unofficial)
- expected 10,000 jobs (unofficial)
