When Tesla CEO Elon Musk decides to make claims on Twitter, it's almost certain that people are going to take him to task. Last year, he claimed that the Tesla Model 3 would beat anything in its class on the track, including the famed BMW M3.
To be clear, we're not just talking about the drag strip here. While Tesla has made a name for itself due to its compelling instant torque, which leads to incredible zero-to-60-mph times and excellent runs at the strip, its flagship vehicles aren't generally sought-after for track use.
Prior to the smaller, more agile Model 3, Tesla vehicles weren't necessarily lauded for their athleticism. The Model S and Model X are quite nimble for their size and weight, but neither vehicle is going to give many a rival a run for its money on twists and turns. Moreover, in the past, the cars have had some issues with endurance on the circuit.
Welcome the Model 3 and all of that is in the past for the Silicon Valley automaker. Top Gear decided to see if Musk's early claims were correct by engaging the small Tesla sedan in four distinct challenges against the BMW M3.
