Can the cheapest version of the Tesla Model S beat the high-style and very expensive BMW i8?

We often see the top-of-the-line Tesla Model S P100D race against equally powerful gasoline cars, but seldom do we get a chance to check out lesser versions of the Model S and even less common is a race between two plug ins.

Here we present a race featuring the cheapest currently available version of the Model S, the 75D, against the plug-in hybrid BMW i8.

The Model S 75D boasts a claimed 470 HP and scoots from 0 to 62 MPH in just 4.4 seconds. However, it's quite heavy at 4,850 pounds. Meanwhile, the BMW i8 checks in at just 3,525 pounds and boasts 357 HP and a 0 to 62 MPH time of an identical 4.4 seconds.

Out on the road though, at least for this challenge, the i8 is outgunned by even this cheap version of the Model S.
