Opel has announced from the Frankfurt Motor Show that its new model - the Grandland X, will be available in a plug-in hybrid version in the future.

Unfortunately, the details dried up pretty much there, as no further estimates were given on what the future compact plug-in utility vehicle's performance or all-electric range might be.

It was however surprising that Opel boss Michael Lohscheller called the upcoming Grandland X PHEV, Opel’s first plug-in hybrid.

And here we thought that Opel already was in the plug-in hybrid business in the past, with the Ampera (a re-badged first generation Chevrolet Volt) - albeit fairly unsuccessfully, selling just over 10,000 copies in ~5 years.

Perhaps the the reason for this thinking is that Opel considers the Grandland X PHEV as its first plug-in hybrid entry is that it is the brand'ss first 'in-house' offering - based off the Peugeot 3008.

Semantics aside, here we have some photos and videos with the new model from Germany (in its non plug-in form of course).  Feel free to leave a comment about what range you would like in this kind of utility vehicle to be interested, and of course at what price - as that was the ultimate downfall of the Ampera in Europe for GM.
