The frugal S-Class can travel in pure electric mode for up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) NEDC.
An entirely different kind of a hybrid compared to the Project One hypercar, the Mercedes S560e comes to replace the old S 500 e (S 550 e in US) version of the pre-facelift S-Class and aims to deliver amazing fuel economy for a car of this size. Without further ado, the partially electrified fullsize sedan will sip just 2.1 liters / 100 km in the combined cycle with corresponding CO2 emissions of 49 g/km.

Not only that, but it will cover up to 31 miles (50 kilometers) running in zero-emissions mode thanks to a new 13.5-kWh lithium-ion battery that has the same physical size as before, but now benefits from an increased capacity.
We should of course note that the 31 mile/50 km number is offering in optimistic NEDC measurements, given the outgoing S plug-in had a 8.7 kWh battery rated for about 12 miles/19 km on the more realistic US/EPA system, we figure one can pencil in about 20-22 miles (32-35 km) of real world driving for the updated car today.
The fact that emphasis was put on efficiency doesn’t mean the latest member of the S-Class family is down on power or performance. On the contrary, its 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine delivers 367 horsepower (270 kilowatts) and 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque whereas the electric motor is good for 121 hp (90 kW) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm). Thanks to this hybrid punch, the new S560e needs only five seconds to reach 62 mph (100 kph) and will do 155 mph (250 kph).
By moving the power electronics into the engine compartment, Mercedes’ engineers were able to free up more space inside the trunk and it now has a total capacity of 410 liters or 15 liters more than it did on the previous S 500 e model. As standard, the luxury sedan benefits from pre-entry climate control if the driver sets a departure time. It will pre-heat the air, steering wheel, and the armrests in the center console and doors, while cooling will also turn on the ventilation function of the seats.
The thrifty S-Class Sedan is being shown in Frankfurt alongside the facelifted Coupe and Cabriolet models, now equipped with OLED taillights and other updates inherited form the sedan revealed earlier this year.
