China is the largest market for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, so its not strange that German brand presented its new 2018 face-lifted version from Auto Shanghai.  But that is ok for the rest of us, because the new offering is also a global product.

As always, we could care less about the petrol-only offerings...it's the plug we care interested in.

And the plug-in hybrid version of the new 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be equipped with a 13.3 kWh battery pack, which is nearly 53% larger than previous 8.7 kWh found in the current S 550 H.

According to Mercedes-Benz, range improves to 50 km* (31 miles).  As always, we will put a big (*) asterisk on that number, and consider Mercedes to be talking via the optimistic NEDC/Euro metric.

However, with the previous model's real-world 19 km (12 miles), we'd be comfortable betting the 2018's real-world/EPA range will be more like 30 km (19 miles).

Interestingly, Mercedes has also equipped the 2018 S-Series plug-in hyrbid with a higher power, on-board charger - up to 7.2 kW, which needs less than two hours to fully charge the battery.  A factory wireless option is also available.

The new interior, as one might expect from a new top-of-the line refresh from Mercedes, looks impressive:
