XL Hybrids Announces First XLP™ Plug-In Hybrid Upfit to be Installed on Ford F-150 Pickup Trucks

It seems that interest in plug-in pickup trucks has really grown recently, as we have seen from Havelaar, Bollinger, and the 80 mile, extended range Workhorse W-15 PHEV.  But even past those names, there is also XL Hybrids, with its XLP Plug-In Hybrid Upfit for the Ford F-150.

Showing some success with its electrified conversion projects, XL Hybrids has announced new customers for its XLP Plug-In Hybrid Upfit for the F-150, which doesn't affect the OEM powertrain or warranty:

  • the City of Long Beach, Calif.
  • Southern California Edison (SCE)
  • Tampa Electric (TECO)
Earlier orders were placed by:
  • NV Energy
  • DTE Energy
  • San Diego Gas & Electric Company — MoU for 110 units
  • Liberty Utilities
  • Hawaiian Electric Company
Deliveries are expected to start in the fourth quarter of this year.

XL Hybrids claims that around 10 kWh battery pack will enable to improve fuel economy by 50%, but the company has yet to disclose if there is any all-electric range (or the ability to switch to a pure EV mode at all).

XLP technology can be installed into:

  • MY17 and MY18 Ford F-150 pickups with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine and Ford’s Auto Stop-Start technology
  • upcoming MY18 Ford F-150 pickup with the new 3.3L base engine featuring Ford’s Auto Stop-Start technology
Quick spec (pdf):
  • more-than-10-kWh battery (no all-electric range number disclosed)
  • Level 1 (<12 hrs.) or Level 2 (<3 hrs.)
  • additional weight of the system 700 lbs (318 kg)
  • Electronic Speed Governor Up to 85 MPH
  • available for 4x2 and 4x4 drivelines
  • warranty is 3-years or 75,000 miles

"Installation of the XLP PHEV system can be completed in just hours on half-ton pickup trucks as a Ford ship-thru upfit. Featuring a volume-production ready high voltage lithium battery pack, XLP will accommodate full charging overnight with Level 1 and less than three hours for Level 2 charging using an industry-standard J1772 plug interface. The XLP technology leaves the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) engine, transmission, fuel system and exhaust system completely intact. Fleets will maintain the complete OEM warranty, and get a three-year, 75,000 mile warranty from XL Hybrids on the XLP powertrain. The XLP system will have no special maintenance requirements.

XLP will also include the XL Link™ cloud-based big data analytics system, which measures MPG performance and reports carbon dioxide emissions reductions. The proprietary XL Link vehicle connectivity is a continuous data link from every vehicle, collecting millions of operational data points, allowing analysis and reports on key performance indicators."

Clay Siegert, XL Hybrids’ co-founder and chief operating officer said:

“Our plug-in hybrid technology is an upfit on the reliable, road-tested and popular Ford F-150. With the OEM powertrain intact, fleet customers will maintain OEM warranty and service. Those are two of the benefits of XLP and the reason major fleets are placing order commitments to be among the first to get this PHEV pickup truck.”
