Tesla Model X
During the first week of September, Tesla Motors hosted an event in Japan to celebrate the launch of the Model X there.
We were alerted to this via a post on the Tesla motors Club forum, though Tesla itself didn't make a formal announcement of the X launch event. This perhaps is due to the expected low-volume sales of the X in Japan where small cars reign supreme.
Reservations for the X are being accepted now, with first deliveries set for the first half of 2017.
The launch event was held at Tesla's store in Aoyama, a district of Tokyo. Tesla has just 2 stores in all of Japan and only 1 service center, so this is clearly not a market of much interest to the electric automaker. However, the Supercharger network there is growing with 11 sites now listed on Tesla's "Find Us" page.
The Model 3 will likely see success in Japan, but both the S and X are really too large of vehicles for the market. However, that hasn't stopped Tesla from at least trying to gain a foothold in one of the world's largest automotive markets.
