Here is a video preview of one of the most luxurious plug-in hybrids to hit the market to date, the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance, which entered the U.S. market in late August. (Note: video-only preview until the 3:45 mark - talking points get underway thereafter)

The 740e is the top of the line version for the 7 Series (all-wheel-drive), with price starting from $89,100 plus $995 Destination and Handling.

We should mention that a $4,500 federal tax credit applies to the purchase, and can be deducted from the cost; making it roughly on par with other 7-series offerings.

Other plug-in competitors in this segment would include: the Porsche Panamera S e-Hybrid, Mercedes S550e Plug-In Hybrid, and of course the Tesla Model S
