Hyundai Genesis G90
According to Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, Hyundai's new luxury brand Genesis will get plug-in hybrids in the future, in line with the changing attitude of the company that saw the addition of the Sonata PHV in late 2015 and the upcoming IONIC plug-in hybrid and all-electric models in the second half of this year.
There are no details about when and which models will be electrified.
The Genesis lineup currently includes the full-size sedan G90, the midsize sedan G80 and soon to get a compact sedan (G70) as well as two crossovers (by 2020).
Plug-in hybrid options are needed to compete with other luxury manufacturers, which also expanding their plug-in hybrid offers (Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac or Volvo).
"Some of those will take the form of the Genesis side of our business," Zuchowski said. "We believe alternative-propulsion engines are going to be really important -- even more important in the luxury market than they are in the mainstream market."
