Ian Callum, director of design for Jaguar, says that the automaker's I-Pace electric SUV opens a new chapter in Jaguar's playbook.
Inside the i-Pace
Callum recently stated:
"This will be our first-ever battery-powered electric vehicle and opens a new chapter in our history."
"I believe electric cars are here for the next 100 years and will eventually replace the combustion engine."
So, it seems even Jaguar believes that electric vehicles are here to stay and that ICE automobiles are travelling down the slow road to extinction.
As for the I-Pace, Callum had a few comments on its design:
"It has to carry on the current Jaguar look. It is very important for Jaguar today to be recognizable as a brand. Our design needs to be consistent."
But there were a few design elements specific to it being electric:
"The rear needed be very aerodynamic, which meant it would be blunt and harsh, so we worked hard to refine it and make it more Jaguar - more elegant."
The CD is remarkably low at 0.29 and this is achieved largely through design work out back, notes Callum.
Callum concluded the discussion by saying the I-Pace is likely the most critical vehicle for Jaguar since the E-Type!
