Indiegogo assisted in crowdfunding an interesting solarcar project - the Sion by the Sono Motors from Germany.

Their idea is to develop an all-electric car (3 + 3 seats), with basically a lot of solar cells stuck all over the place (covering 7.5 m2 total) - which will reportedly provide up to 30 km (≈19 mi) of additional range every day under the proper conditions.

Sion. A Solarcar for everyone.

According to the project website, 120% of required amount was funded this past September -  €259,365. So will this car become a real thing now?  How far with this capital actually go?  I guess we will find out soon enough.

Sono Motors intends to offer two versions, differentiated by battery capacity/range (in this case *NEDC we believe):

  • Extender with 250 km / 155 mi (30 kWh) range for €16,000 / $17.600
  • Urban with 120 km / 75 mi (14.4 kWh) range for €12,000 / $13.200
The EV's electric motor is rated at 80 kW, good for a 140 km/h (87 mph) top speed, while charging is similar to the Reanult ZOE's (Q90) on-board system, accepting everything from single-phase 3 kW to three-phase 43 kW.

Test drives to be available in 2017, while sales could start as early as 2018.

"The SION is an innovative electric car with integrated solar cells in the body, a range of 250km and a price of less than € 16,000.

30 free kilometers per day are possible with electricity generated by the sun. The stored energy can be used through bidirectional charging for all common electronic devices. SION is a family friendly vehicle, thanks to 6 seats and optional trailer coupling.

In Short: A self-charging electric car for infinite, sustainable driving."
