In early January, at CES 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada, BMW will reportedly unveil an all-new concept version of the BMW i8 Spyder convertible.

This version is expected to more closely resemble the production-bound model and not the original concept spec.  The production edition is expected to be offered some time later next year or in early 2017.

As Autocar states:

"In December 2013, officials said the car was presenting "major challenges" to its engineers. Those problems hinged around incorporating the carbonfibre-reinforced plastic body shell construction of the i8 into a convertible format."

"Speaking to Autocar at the time, a company spokesman said there would be "no set timeframe" for the launch of the car. However, it now appears that BMW has solved those challenges, so a launch within the next 12 months is likely. Indeed, BMW boss Harald Krueger has reportedly told German media that a production version of the car isn't far off."

CES 2016 will be packed with reveals, including Faraday Future's concept Tesla-rival, the production version of the Chevrolet Bolt, a Volkswagen electric bus concept and so on. All these reveals means that its less likely we'll see too new major electric car debuts in Detroit at the 2016 NAIAS a week later.
