ChargePoint released its Top 10 EV-Friendly Metropolitan Areas list, which takes into consideration number of EVs, charging points and population.

San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles took the two first spots for California thanks to a very high number of EVs - more than 48,000 and nearly 57,000 respectively.

"The San Francisco Bay Area (including San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose) led the nation, followed by Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego and Honolulu.

Equating for population differences, ChargePoint scored the cities based on the number of EVs on the road and the number of charging stations available on the ChargePoint network as of December 31, 2014. The regions are core based statistical areas as defined by the Census."

ChargePoint’s Top 10 EV-Friendly Metropolitan Areas:

  1. San Francisco Bay Area, CA
  2. Los Angeles, CA
  3. Seattle, WA
  4. San Diego, CA
  5. Honolulu, HI
  6. Austin, TX
  7. Detroit, MI
  8. Atlanta, GA
  9. Denver, CO
  10. Portland, OR"

ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano commented:

“Although the West Coast continues to lead the nation in EV friendliness, the fact that cities like Atlanta and Denver broke into the top 10 demonstrates that this is not regional trend, but that our nation is quickly transitioning from gas powered cars to EVs. In cities across the country, it’s becoming easier than ever to drive an EV – and that’s good news for our industry and for our environment.”

This Top 10 list allows us to see where adoption is the strongest, but there's value in comparing this to the earlier 2013 Top list.

While the leader of the rank remains the same, there are a lot of changes on the other positions. For example, Los Angeles went up from sixth to second. Seattle and San Diego, both lost one position to third and fourth, but remain strong. Honolulu is without change in fifth.

Austin fell from fourth to sixth. Portland fell from seventh to tenth, but Detroit is going up from eight to seventh. Washington, DC and Boston dropped out of the list and were replaced by the Atlanta and Denver - both states have generous incentives for EVs, which for sure influenced the results.
