The all-new Volvo XC90 SUV is hot, with Volvo reporting strong demand for the conventional versions of this luxury SUV:

Strong early demand for all-new Volvo XC90

The all-new Volvo XC90 is proving to be a hit with customers even before it has appeared in showrooms, with over 16,000 orders for the brand new seven-seat SUV already received.

“These strong order numbers are very encouraging and it shows that customers obviously like what they see in the new XC90,” says Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “The new XC90 represents the new Volvo Cars and it is the first in a series of new cars to come, as we renew our entire product portfolio in the coming years.”

The new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo’s history, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilising its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology and Drive-E powertrain family.

The end result is a visually striking, luxury seven seat SUV with world leading safety features, new powertrain technologies, an unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency and a superlative interior finish.

Series production of the new XC90 at the Torslanda plant in Sweden started in the last week of January, and deliveries to customers will commence this spring.

Our hope is that once the T8 plug-in version of the XC90 launches, demand will soar even higher.

Volvo claims that the XC90 T8 PHEV is the “world’s most powerful and cleanest 7-seat SUV."  Powerful it is, with the electric motors and internal combustion engine pumping out a total of 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque.  0 to 62 MPH is listed at 5.9 seconds.

Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group stated:

“The XC90 T8 is a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one. The Drive-E engines already offer highly competitive performance versus the competition. The T8 takes it further into a leading position.”

Clean?  Yes, it's clean for an SUV.  The XC90 has a 9.2 kWh battery pack that provides up to 40 km (25 miles) in the pure electric mode under NEDC conditions – think 17-20 miles on the EPA standard when it arrives in the US later this year.

But it's expensive.  In the UK, prices start under £60,000, while in Germany pricing is from €76,705 (including tax, without any incentives). This translates to some $94,000, but the actual U.S. price will probably be in the ballpark range of $70,000-$75,000.  Meanwhile, the Volvo T8 PHEV has been priced at $73,400 (base R-Design) and $75,000 for the Inscription model in Canada. We expect to receive official U.S. pricing soon.
