It’s time once again to take a look at plug-in electric vehicle sales in Canada.

No surprise in that the Chevy Volt was most likely the #1 selling plug-in vehicle in Canada for the month of September. Sales of the Volt checked in at 145 units in Canada in September, a decline compared to the 186 sold in August. YTD, 1,294 Volts have been sold in Canada this year, easily besting the 913 sold in all 0f 2013.

Nissan LEAF sales checked in at 113 units sold in Canada in September (identical to the 113 sold in August). For the LEAF, this is the only fifth time ever that sales have topped 100 in Canada (May 2014: 101; June 2014: 104; July 117; August 113) The 117 units sold in July still is the single-month record for Nissan LEAF sales in Canada. YTD, LEAF sales are now at 805 units in Canada, compared to 470 sold in the whole of 2013.

Tesla Model S sales figures aren’t available in Canada at this time. Estimating a figure is rather difficult, given the wild swings we’ve seen thus far in terms of monthly sales this year. However, with September being a break-out month for Model S sales in the US, we suspect figures in Canada will be high too (perhaps record-setting). Known Tesla Model S sales figures for the year in Canada are as follows:

  • January: 20
  • February: 19
  • March: 119
  • April: 71
  • May: 61
  • June: 104
  • July:48
  • August: 25
YTD excluding September: 467

We don’t yet have figures for BMW i3 in its fourth month of availability in Canada, but in its first four months it sold a total of 116 units. Meanwhile, Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid sales amounted to 11 units in September.  YTD, 63 Prius Plug-Ins have been sold in Canada.

Smart Fortwo ED sales in July checked in at a rather remarkable 79 units, followed by an even more spectacular 133 sold in August.  A sweet deal on the Fortwo ED is responsible for this uptick in sales, according to Green Car Reports.

Here are the rest of the September results from the typically low-volume sellers in Canada:

  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV: 7 (86 YTD)
  • Cadillac ELR: 3 (YTD 31)
Ford’s PHEV sales are estimated at 20 for C-Max Energi for September (~164 YTD) and 8 for Fusion Energi in September (~83 YTD).  Focus Electric sales are typically in the single digits, though September's results remain unknown at this time.

In terms of total 2013 numbers, here’s how plug-ins fared in Canada:
